Best Birdwatching Areas

One of the most rewarding places to visit is Bubali Bird Sanctuary, a wetland close to Palm Beach. Its shallow pools attract herons, egrets, ducks and other waterbirds, particularly during the cooler months when migrant species pass through the Caribbean. Visit early, when the air is cooler and the birds are most active.

Arikok National Park provides a very different setting. The rugged interior is home to dry forest, rocky slopes and tall divi-divi trees, with opportunities to spot colourful parakeets, hummingbirds and Aruba’s distinctive burrowing owl. The park’s trails also reveal dramatic scenery, so every walk feels like a small adventure.

Along the southern coast, the salt pans and mangroves around San Nicolas and the Spanish Lagoon are worth exploring. These habitats can attract flamingos, pelicans and graceful shorebirds. Take care near nesting areas and keep a respectful distance, especially when using a camera.

Birds to Look For

Aruba’s best-known bird is the shoco, or Aruban burrowing owl. This small owl is found only on Aruba, and its bright yellow eyes and pale markings make it a memorable sight. It is most active around dawn and dusk, when it may be seen near its low burrow in open ground.

You may also encounter orange-winged parrots, bright green parakeets, bananaquits and several kinds of dove. Near the coast, watch for brown pelicans, frigatebirds and terns gliding above the waves. A local guide can help identify calls and point out species that are easy to miss.

Planning Your Trip

The dry season, generally from January to August, is a comfortable time for exploring Aruba’s nature, although birds can be seen throughout the year. Early mornings are usually best for activity and softer light, while late afternoons can be productive too. Wear sun protection, carry plenty of water and choose light, breathable clothing.

Bring binoculars, a notebook and a camera with a modest zoom lens. Staying quiet and moving slowly will give you better views than rushing between sightings.
