Beach lovers are spoilt for choice, with more than 30 beaches around the island. Orient Bay is one of the best known, offering a wide sweep of sand, warm shallow water and a friendly beach-club scene. It is a good place to try paddleboarding, swimming or simply settle down with a good book.

For something quieter, head to Anse Marcel, Grand Case or Friar’s Bay. Maho Beach on the Dutch side is famous for its position beside the airport runway, where visitors can watch aircraft pass overhead. Always check local safety advice and keep a sensible distance from the aircraft area.

Saint Martin is often described as the culinary capital of the Caribbean, and the food is a major part of its appeal. There is more to a Saint Martin holiday than the beach. Take a boat trip to nearby islands, go snorkelling in clear bays or join a guided nature excursion through the hills. The island is also a great base for sailing, diving and sunset cruises, with views that are especially memorable from the water.

For a slower day, explore the colourful streets of Marigot, visit Fort Louis or browse the market for spices, crafts and fresh produce. On the Dutch side, Philipsburg offers a pleasant boardwalk and historic sights, while the island’s roads lead to viewpoints where you can pause for wide Caribbean panoramas.

Planning Your Stay

The island enjoys a warm climate throughout the year, with the driest and busiest period generally running from December to April. Summer can be quieter and often offers good value, although travellers should consider the Atlantic hurricane season when choosing dates.
