Bonaire is famous for its protected coastline and outstanding underwater scenery. In February, clear seas and pleasant conditions create superb opportunities for snorkelling and diving in Bonaire National Marine Park. Many accessible shore sites allow you to enter the water at your own pace, where parrotfish, angelfish, turtles and shoals of smaller reef fish move among the coral.

On land, look out for the island’s famous flamingos around the salt pans and shallow lagoons. The southern landscapes are striking, with white salt mounds, cactus-covered hills and wide views across the sea. Early morning is a good time for birdwatching and photography, before the sun becomes stronger and the breeze picks up.

Sint Eustatius Outdoors

Sint Eustatius, often called Statia, combines history with quiet natural beauty. Walk around the historic centre of Oranjestad, then follow trails towards The Quill, a dormant volcanic crater covered in lush vegetation. The climb rewards you with a completely different landscape from Bonaire, including tall trees, palms and views across the island.

February is a comfortable month for hiking here, although trails can be steep and uneven in places. Take plenty of water, wear proper shoes and consider a local guide if you want to learn about the island’s plants, geology and wildlife. The slower pace and lack of crowds make Statia ideal for travellers who enjoy discovering somewhere beyond the usual Caribbean resorts.

Saba’s Mountain Trails

Saba is the most mountainous of the three islands, and its dramatic scenery makes it a wonderful choice for walkers. The Bottom and Windwardside are linked by well-maintained trails that pass through rainforest, stone steps and viewpoints over the sea. The Mount Scenery route is one of the island’s best-known walks, leading through rich vegetation towards the highest point in the Netherlands.

Cloud can gather around the summit, while lower paths may be bright and sunny, so conditions can change quickly. February’s mild, dry weather is well suited to exploring, but good footwear remains essential. After a walk, enjoy the island’s small restaurants and friendly atmosphere, or simply watch the light change over the surrounding water.
