The salt ponds around Saint Martin and Sint Maarten are among the best places to look for birdlife. These shallow, open waters attract wading birds and seabirds, while the surrounding reeds and scrub provide cover for smaller species. Great egrets, snowy egrets, herons and brown pelicans are commonly seen, particularly around quieter edges.

These habitats are ideal for spotting bananaquits, pearly-eyed thrashers, tropical mockingbirds and Caribbean elaenias. The best walks are often unhurried rather than demanding. Wear a hat, carry water and pause regularly at viewpoints, where you can combine birdwatching with wide views across bays, beaches and neighbouring islands.
