Willemstad Waterfront

Start your Curaçao photo trail in Willemstad, where the colourful buildings along Handelskade make one of the island’s most recognisable views. Pastel yellow, pink and blue façades line the water, creating an easy Instagram backdrop that looks good in almost any weather.

January is a particularly pleasant time to explore. The days are generally warm and bright, while a refreshing breeze keeps a stroll through the historic centre comfortable. Visit in the morning for softer light, or return around sunset when the façades take on a warmer glow and the harbour begins to sparkle.

Queen Emma Bridge

For a photograph with a real sense of place, walk across the Queen Emma Bridge, the floating pontoon that links Willemstad’s Punda and Otrobanda districts. The bridge moves when boats pass through, so you may find yourself waiting briefly before capturing a clear view of the waterfront.

Try a wide-angle shot from the bridge, including the colourful skyline and a few boats in the channel. If the bridge is open, take photographs from either side while you wait. After dark, its lights create a different mood, with the illuminated walkway reflected in the calm water.

Kenepa Beach

Curaçao’s western beaches offer some of the island’s best scenery, and Playa Kenepa is a favourite for bright, natural photographs. The contrast between turquoise water, pale sand and rugged green hills makes it easy to understand why this bay appears so often on social media.

Bring your phone in a waterproof case if you plan to swim or snorkel, as the water is wonderfully clear close to shore. The beach can become busier later in the day, so arrive early for a quieter frame and stronger colours. A simple shot looking out over the bay often says more than a heavily edited image.

Flamingos At Jan Kok

Head towards Jan Kok for the chance to photograph wild flamingos standing in the island’s salt pans. Their vivid pink colouring stands out against the pale water and dry landscape, creating one of Curaçao’s most distinctive photo opportunities.

Keep a respectful distance and use your phone’s zoom rather than approaching the birds. Early morning or late afternoon usually gives the gentlest light, while a little patience can reveal a flamingo wading, preening or taking flight. Remember that wildlife photography is best when the animals remain undisturbed.

West Coast Sunsets

Finish your January sightseeing with a west-coast sunset. The island’s dry terrain, rocky shoreline and open sea provide a simple but dramatic setting, especially when clouds catch the last light of the day.

Arrive around half an hour before sunset so you can find a safe viewpoint and watch the colours change. Include a person, palm or rocky edge in the foreground to give the image depth. Once the sun has disappeared, stay a few minutes longer for soft pink and orange tones across the sky.
