Willemstad’s Colourful Waterfront

For many visitors, the first must-see Instagram hotspot in Curaçao is the Handelskade in Willemstad. Its row of brightly painted Dutch colonial buildings sits beside the calm waters of St Anna Bay, creating one of the island’s most recognisable views. Walk across the Queen Emma pontoon bridge for a wide shot, or stand near the waterfront for colourful details and reflections.

Early morning is a great time to take photographs, when the light is soft and the streets are quieter. The buildings look just as appealing in the late afternoon, especially when the sun brings out their yellow, pink and blue façades. Take a little time to explore the nearby lanes too, where cafés, murals and historic architecture provide plenty of extra photo opportunities.

Queen Emma Bridge

The floating Queen Emma Bridge is more than a practical way to cross the harbour. Known locally as the Swinging Old Lady, it opens regularly to let boats pass through St Anna Bay, making it an entertaining subject for photographs. From the bridge, you can capture Willemstad on one side and the busy harbour on the other.

For a classic travel photograph, frame the bridge with the Handelskade behind you and wait for the colourful flags or a passing boat to add movement. If the bridge swings open while you are crossing, simply follow the instructions from the attendants and enjoy the view from the waterfront until it returns to place.

Across the water from the Handelskade, Otrobanda offers a different side of Curaçao. Its historic streets are filled with colourful murals, painted shutters and creative public art, giving you a relaxed setting for natural holiday photographs. The neighbourhood is ideal for wandering without a strict route.

Look beyond the largest murals for small details such as brightly decorated doors, local signs and textured walls. Visit during daylight and be respectful when photographing people or businesses. A short walk through Otrobanda can easily be combined with lunch, coffee or a visit to the Kura Hulanda area.

Salt Pans and Flamingos

Near Jan Kok, the salt pans create a striking landscape of white banks, shallow water and changing pink tones. Flamingos are sometimes seen feeding in the distance, adding a memorable touch to photographs. The scene feels peaceful and spacious, particularly around sunrise or sunset.

Use a zoom lens or phone zoom rather than approaching the birds, and stay on public paths or roadside viewpoints.
