Why Visit in February

February is an excellent month for a birdwatching holiday in the Dominican Republic. The weather is generally warm, bright and pleasantly dry, making early starts in forests, wetlands and coastal reserves much more comfortable than during the hotter summer months. Mornings are often especially rewarding, with birds active before the midday sunshine becomes intense.

This is also a good time to look for winter visitors from North America alongside the island’s resident species. Island Endemics to Find

The Dominican Republic shares the island of Hispaniola with Haiti, and several birds found here are endemic to the island. Keep watch for the Hispaniolan parrot, with its bright green plumage and lively calls, as well as the Hispaniolan trogon, a particularly special sighting in suitable woodland. The palmchat, the national bird, is another favourite and is often seen around palms and open countryside.

Other possibilities include the Hispaniolan woodpecker, Hispaniolan lizard cuckoo and the striking broad-billed tody. The tody is tiny, quick and often found in leafy forest edges, so patience helps. A local guide can make a real difference by knowing the calls, favoured feeding spots and quieter trails where you are more likely to enjoy an unhurried view.

Los Haitises National Park is a rewarding choice for a February birdwatching trip. Its mangroves, forest, limestone hills and coastal waters create a rich mix of habitats, while boat journeys offer a different perspective on the park. Look and listen carefully around the vegetation, where herons, kingfishers, doves and forest species may appear.

For mountain scenery, consider the areas around Jarabacoa and the higher Cordillera Central.
