Why Visit in January

January is an excellent month for a birdwatching holiday in the Dominican Republic. The weather is generally warm, sunny and pleasantly dry, making it comfortable to spend long hours outdoors without the heavier humidity found later in the year. Clear mornings are especially rewarding, with birds active in the cool early light.

The island offers a remarkable range of habitats in a relatively compact area. Birds to Look For

With patience, you may also encounter Hispaniolan parrots, Hispaniolan parakeets and the striking broad-billed tody. Mountain areas can produce rarer sightings, including the Hispaniolan trogon, while wetlands and beaches are good places to look for herons, egrets, shorebirds and wintering waterfowl. Best Places for Birdwatching

Los Haitises National Park is a superb choice for exploring mangrove channels, limestone scenery and humid forest. Boat trips can reveal herons and other waterbirds, while trails and quiet viewpoints provide opportunities for woodland species. The park feels wonderfully wild, yet can be included in a well-planned holiday itinerary.

In the south-west, Lake Enriquillo and nearby protected areas offer a very different experience. The dry landscape supports unusual wildlife, and the lake is known for waterbirds as well as American crocodiles and iguanas. The Sierra de Bahoruco is particularly important for serious birders, with changing elevations and habitats that support some of the island’s most sought-after endemic species.
