Grenada Walking Holidays

Walking in January

January is an excellent month for a walking holiday in Grenada. The island is warm, generally drier than later in the year, and pleasantly breezy, making it far more comfortable for exploring on foot than the hotter parts of the afternoon might suggest. With average daytime temperatures around 28°C, you can enjoy active mornings followed by a relaxing swim or a quiet lunch.

Grenada offers much more than beaches. Trails lead through rainforest, spice plantations, fishing villages and hills with wide views across the Caribbean Sea. Whether you prefer a gentle coastal stroll or a more demanding climb, the island has plenty of variety for a rewarding January escape.

Rainforest Trails

One of the most memorable walks is through Grand Etang National Park and Forest Reserve. Paths wind beneath towering trees and tropical plants, with the sounds of birds and insects accompanying you along the way. Look out for Mona monkeys, colourful flowers and glimpses of Grand Etang Lake, a peaceful volcanic crater lake surrounded by green forest.

Some routes are short and manageable, while others involve steep or uneven ground. Sturdy walking shoes are useful, particularly after rain, and a local guide can add real interest by explaining the medicinal plants, spices and wildlife you see. January is a particularly good time to start early, before the midday heat builds.

Coastal Views

For sea air and impressive scenery, explore a coastal path near the south or west of the island. Walks around villages such as Gouyave and Sauteurs combine lively local life with views of coves, headlands and fishing boats. The pace is easy-going, and there are usually welcoming places to stop for fresh fruit, a cold drink or a plate of freshly prepared seafood.

Grand Anse is ideal for a relaxed beach walk, especially early in the day when the sand is cool and the bay is calm. Further along the coast, quieter stretches offer the chance to pause beneath a palm tree and watch the water. Remember to carry water, sun protection and a light cover-up, as shade can be limited on exposed routes.

Plan Your Walk

A walking holiday in Grenada works best with a little preparation. Wear breathable clothing, take insect repellent and pack a waterproof layer for sudden tropical showers. Local maps and guides are helpful because some paths are informal, and a taxi or organised excursion can make it easier to reach trailheads.

Allow time to enjoy the island between walks. Visit a rum distillery, browse the market in St George’s or simply relax on the beach after a morning outdoors. In January, Grenada’s warm weather, fresh landscapes and friendly atmosphere create an inviting balance of activity and relaxation for walkers of all abilities.
