Guadeloupe Diving January

January Diving Conditions

January is an excellent month for scuba diving in Guadeloupe. The islands are enjoying their dry season, so days are generally warm, bright and comfortable, with sea temperatures around 26°C. Visibility is often impressive, commonly reaching 20 metres or more, making it easy to appreciate the reef, rock formations and marine life below the surface.

Water conditions can vary between dive sites, but many sheltered areas remain calm and inviting. A light wetsuit is usually a sensible choice for longer dives, particularly if you feel the cold after spending time in the water. With reliable sunshine and a refreshing breeze, January offers a great balance between underwater adventures and relaxed time on the beach.

Where To Dive

Basse-Terre is the main focus for scuba diving in Guadeloupe, especially around the protected waters of the Cousteau Reserve near Bouillante. This celebrated marine area includes coral gardens, volcanic underwater scenery, caves and drop-offs, with sites suitable for both newer divers and experienced visitors. Local dive centres know the conditions well and can match trips to your experience and interests.

January is also a good time to explore the waters around the Pigeon Islands. You may drift over colourful sponges and coral, pass rocky walls and spot shoals of tropical fish moving through the blue. Sea turtles are a particular highlight, while barracuda, moray eels, rays and reef fish are also possible sightings.

Marine Life Encounters

Guadeloupe’s warm Caribbean waters support a fascinating variety of marine life. Even an ordinary-looking reef can become busy once you settle into a slow, quiet dive. Watch for butterflyfish and angelfish among the coral, camouflaged scorpionfish on rocky ledges, and trumpetfish hovering almost motionless in the current.

January can bring excellent encounters with turtles, which often glide calmly over the reef or rest near underwater rocks. Keep a respectful distance and avoid touching them or the coral. Your patience is usually rewarded, as marine life tends to carry on naturally when divers move gently and avoid sudden movements.

Planning Your Dive Holiday

Book your dive centre and accommodation in advance if you are travelling during the busy winter season. A reputable operator should provide well-maintained equipment, qualified instructors and clear briefings about currents, depths and local conditions. If you are not currently certified, introductory dives and courses are available, while qualified divers can arrange guided trips and equipment hire.

Try to leave enough time between diving and flying, and consider adding a rest day so you can enjoy Guadeloupe at an easy pace. Away from the water, you can visit rainforest viewpoints, sample Creole food or relax on a quiet beach. With warm weather, clear seas and memorable dive sites, Guadeloupe in January is a rewarding choice for a Caribbean scuba holiday.
