Why Visit in January?

January is an excellent month for a backpacking holiday in Saint Kitts and Nevis. Base yourself in Basseterre for a few nights and get to know Saint Kitts at street level. Independence Square and the surrounding streets offer a useful introduction to the island’s history and everyday life.

Backpackers will appreciate the town’s practical side. You can stock up on snacks, arrange transport and ask locals about quieter swimming spots or walking routes. Try local specialities such as goat water, saltfish and fresh seafood, and leave time for an unhurried chat; Kittitians are often happy to share suggestions.

Island-Hop to Nevis

The short ferry crossing from Saint Kitts to Nevis is a natural part of any backpacking itinerary. Charlestown has a calm, historic feel, with colourful houses, small museums and beaches that are easy to reach by taxi or local bus. Mount Nevis forms a dramatic backdrop, but the island’s greatest pleasure is simply slowing down.

Spend an afternoon swimming at Pinney’s Beach, then watch the light change over the water as you eat at a beach bar. Nevis is also known for its thermal springs and plantation inns, giving you plenty of ways to balance active days with a little comfort.
