February is one of the best months for a Saint Kitts and Nevis backpacking holiday. St George’s Anglican Church, Independence Square and the lively market area offer an introduction to the island’s history and everyday rhythm. Take your time, chat with local shopkeepers and stop for a cold drink when the afternoon sun becomes stronger.

For backpackers, Basseterre is a useful base for arranging transport, boat trips and inexpensive meals. You can sample Caribbean dishes such as grilled fish, goat water stew and spicy rice, often at casual cafés where the welcome is as memorable as the food. In the evening, head towards the waterfront for a relaxed view across the harbour.

A short ferry ride from Saint Kitts brings you to Nevis, a rewarding addition to any February backpacking itinerary. Charlestown has handsome historic buildings, quiet lanes and a calm waterfront, while the island’s beaches are ideal for swimming and an unhurried afternoon with a good book.

Nevis also offers walking routes around the lower slopes of Nevis Peak, along with welcoming guesthouses and locally owned restaurants. The pace is peaceful, but you will still find opportunities to meet other travellers. Check ferry times before setting out and allow extra time for the return journey.
