December Birdwatching

Why Visit in December?

December is an excellent time for an Antigua and Barbuda birdwatching holiday. The islands are warm, bright and comfortably dry, with daytime temperatures usually around 28°C. After the wetter months, the countryside is looking fresh, while clear mornings make it easy to spend several hours outdoors.

There is also a lovely change of pace at this time of year. You can begin with an early birdwatching walk, enjoy a relaxed lunch by the sea, then return to a lagoon or woodland site in the afternoon. The Christmas season brings a little extra life to the resorts and villages, but there are still plenty of peaceful places where the main sounds are birdsong and rustling palms.

Antigua’s Best Habitats

Antigua offers a rewarding mixture of habitats in a relatively compact area. The island’s mangroves, salt ponds and coastal wetlands are particularly valuable for birdwatchers. Look carefully around the shoreline and you may see herons, egrets, sandpipers and other visiting waders feeding in the shallows.

Inland, dry scrub and woodland provide a different experience. Antigua’s national bird, the magnificent frigatebird, is often seen soaring above the coast, its forked tail easy to recognise against the sky. You may also spot bananaquits, doves, kingbirds and tropical mockingbirds in gardens, open fields and quieter rural areas.

A Day Trip to Barbuda

For serious birdwatchers, a visit to Barbuda can be the highlight of a Caribbean holiday. The island is famous for its large frigatebird colony, found around the Codrington Lagoon area. Seeing these graceful birds circling overhead and perched along the mangroves is a memorable experience, especially when the males display their distinctive red throat pouches.

Barbuda feels wonderfully unhurried, with broad beaches, open landscapes and very little traffic. Boat trips and guided excursions are generally the best way to reach the key wildlife areas, and a local guide can help you understand the birds and the delicate environment around them. Allow a full day and take water, sun protection and comfortable footwear.

Making the Most of Your Holiday

Bird activity is often highest early in the morning, so plan your main outings before breakfast or ask your accommodation to prepare something to take with you. Lightweight clothing, a hat, binoculars and insect repellent are useful, while a light waterproof layer is sensible for the occasional shower.

Choose a knowledgeable local guide if you want to find less obvious species or visit protected habitats responsibly. Keep a respectful distance, avoid playing bird calls and never feed wildlife. With a little planning, December in Antigua and Barbuda combines excellent birdwatching with warm beaches, welcoming people and plenty of time to enjoy island life at your own pace.
