Aruba Birdwatching

Caribbean Holidays, Aruba Birdwatching, Colourful tropical birds perched among cacti and dry scrub in Aruba during warm May sunshine

Why Choose May?

May is a rewarding time for an Aruba birdwatching holiday. The island is warm, generally sunny and quieter than during the busiest winter months, so you can enjoy its natural areas at a relaxed pace. Early mornings are especially pleasant, with cooler air, soft light and birds becoming active before the heat of the day.

Aruba’s dry climate creates a distinctive landscape of cactus, thorny shrubs, sandy ground and coastal lagoons. This open scenery makes many birds easier to spot than they would be in dense woodland. Bring binoculars, comfortable walking shoes, sun protection and plenty of water, then set out with time to pause and listen.

Bubali Bird Sanctuary

Bubali Bird Sanctuary is one of the best-known places for birdwatching in Aruba and an excellent starting point for a May visit. Its wetlands attract resident and visiting birds, particularly around the pools, reeds and mangroves. Look carefully across the water and along the vegetation for herons, egrets, coots and other waterbirds.

The sanctuary is close to the popular hotel area, making it easy to combine with a day at the beach or a leisurely lunch. Visit early, when birds are most active and the temperature is comfortable. Move slowly, keep your voice low and allow your eyes time to adjust; some of the best sightings come after a quiet wait.

Arikok National Park

For a wider variety of scenery, head into Arikok National Park. The park’s rocky hills, desert-like plains and cactus-studded valleys provide habitat for several of Aruba’s characteristic birds. Keep watch for bright green parakeets, burrowing owls and crested birds moving between the shrubs.

A hire car or guided excursion is useful here, as distances can be longer and some tracks are rough. Plan a morning visit, wear a hat and stay on marked routes where possible. The park is also a superb place to appreciate how Aruba’s wildlife has adapted to a dry island environment.

Coastal Birdwatching

Aruba’s coastline offers a different kind of birdwatching holiday. Around rocky shores, salt flats and quieter beaches, seabirds can often be seen gliding over the water or resting on exposed rocks. Watch for gulls, terns and frigatebirds, particularly when the breeze lifts them above the shoreline.

Take care near the water and avoid approaching nesting birds. A small notebook can be useful for recording sightings, while a camera with a modest zoom lets you capture memories without disturbing wildlife. The changing light near sunset can make a final stroll along the coast especially enjoyable.

Plan Your Visit

May is a comfortable month for exploring, but Aruba’s sun is strong, even when the breeze makes it feel mild. Start activities early, carry water and choose lightweight clothing. Many visitors find that alternating wildlife outings with time by the sea creates the perfect balance.

Whether you are an experienced birder or simply enjoy nature, Aruba offers accessible and varied wildlife experiences. With wetlands, national park trails and open coastline all within reach, a May birdwatching holiday can be both rewarding and refreshingly easy-going.
