Aruba Birdwatching

Caribbean Holidays, Aruba Birdwatching, Colourful Caribbean birds among cacti and dry scrub in Aruba during October, warm natural light

Aruba in October

October is a rewarding time for an Aruba birdwatching holiday. The island is warm, bright and easy to explore, while the quieter season can make it feel wonderfully relaxed. Early mornings are especially enjoyable, with a light breeze, comfortable temperatures and birds becoming active before the heat of the day.

Aruba’s dry landscape gives it a character all of its own. Instead of dense rainforest, you will find cactus-studded hills, thorny scrub, sandy coastlines and pockets of green around ponds and gardens. This varied scenery supports an appealing mix of resident Caribbean birds and seasonal visitors.

Wetlands and Lagoons

One of the best places to begin birdwatching in October is around Aruba’s wetlands and lagoons. The Bubali Bird Sanctuary, close to the island’s popular resort area, can attract herons, egrets, coots and other waterbirds. Take your time and scan the reeds, shallow water and surrounding trees, as birds often appear when you are least expecting them.

October may also bring passing migrants and seabirds, adding variety to a morning’s observations. A local guide can help identify unfamiliar species and explain how Aruba’s limited freshwater habitats support wildlife. Visits are most comfortable early in the day, when the light is excellent for photography and the birds are generally more active.

Birds of the Dry Country

Aruba’s arid interior is home to some of its most memorable birds. Look out for the distinctive burrowing owl, which may be seen near open ground and low vegetation, as well as colourful parakeets moving noisily between cacti and scrub. Brown pelicans, frigatebirds and magnificent frigatebirds are also familiar sights around the coast.

Arikok National Park offers a superb setting for exploring this side of the island. Its rugged trails, rocky slopes and wide views make every outing feel different, and the cooler morning hours are ideal for walking. Bring binoculars, sturdy footwear, water and sun protection, and keep a respectful distance from nesting birds and other wildlife.

A Relaxed Island Experience

Birdwatching in Aruba does not need to be a full-time activity. You can combine a dawn excursion with a leisurely breakfast, spend the afternoon swimming or exploring Oranjestad, then watch pelicans and terns along the shore before sunset. This easy mixture of wildlife, beaches and local culture makes an October break particularly appealing.

Choose accommodation near the coast for convenient access to beaches and restaurants, or stay closer to the island’s quieter natural areas if you prefer an early start. With a little planning, October offers warm weather, interesting birdlife and plenty of time to enjoy Aruba at your own pace. It is an excellent choice for both keen birders and travellers who simply enjoy discovering nature somewhere new.
