BVI Adventure Holidays

Why Visit in May?

May is a particularly good time for an adventure holiday in the British Virgin Islands. The islands are warm, bright and inviting, while the busiest winter period has eased, giving you more space to enjoy the beaches, trails and water. Days are generally ideal for getting outdoors, with plenty of sunshine and a refreshing breeze across the sea.

This is also a useful month for travellers who want variety. You can spend the morning exploring on foot, take to the water after lunch and finish with a relaxed meal overlooking the harbour. Occasional showers may pass through, but they are often brief, helping to keep the hills and gardens beautifully green.

Explore Beneath the Water

The BVI is made for time on the water, and May brings excellent opportunities for swimming, snorkelling and diving. Around Norman Island, the Caves offer a memorable snorkelling trip, with clear water, rocky formations and plenty of bright marine life. At the Indians, experienced divers can explore dramatic underwater pinnacles close to the surface.

Chartering a boat or joining a guided excursion makes it easy to discover quiet coves and uninhabited islands. You might stop for a swim at The Baths on Virgin Gorda, drift over a shallow reef or enjoy a picnic on a beach that feels wonderfully remote. Local guides know the best places to visit according to the weather and sea conditions.

Walk, Climb and Discover

For a change of pace, explore the islands on foot. Tortola’s Sage Mountain National Park has shaded forest paths and viewpoints across the surrounding islands, while trails around Cane Garden Bay and Brewer’s Bay combine gentle walking with rewarding coastal scenery. An early start is sensible, as temperatures rise during the middle of the day.

Virgin Gorda offers some of the BVI’s most distinctive landscapes. Walk among the enormous granite boulders at The Baths, where narrow passages lead to sea pools and a sandy shoreline. Elsewhere, a guided kayak trip through mangroves can reveal a quieter side of the islands, with seabirds and small marine creatures close to the route.

Relax After the Action

Adventure in the BVI does not mean rushing all day. After a hike or boat trip, settle into a beach bar with a cold drink, watch yachts return to the anchorage and enjoy the easy island atmosphere. Fresh fish, Caribbean spices and locally grown ingredients feature on many menus, so dinner becomes part of the holiday experience.

May is a great choice if you want an active Caribbean break with time to slow down as well. Whether your ideal day involves sailing between islands, exploring underwater caves or simply finding a peaceful beach, the British Virgin Islands offer plenty of ways to make it your own.
