Cuba Walking Holidays

Caribbean Holidays, Cuba Walking Holidays, Travellers walking along a quiet cobbled street in Trinidad, Cuba, beneath bright February sunshine

Discover Cuba on Foot

February is an excellent month for a Cuba walking holiday. The weather is generally warm, dry and comfortable, making it much easier to explore historic towns, mountain trails and coastal paths than during the hotter summer months. With fewer extremes of heat and humidity, you can enjoy each day at a relaxed pace.

Cuba rewards curious walkers. One moment you might be following a colourful street in Havana, with classic cars passing by, and the next you could be heading into green countryside filled with palms and birdlife. Walking lets you notice the smaller details, from peeling colonial paintwork to the sound of music drifting from an open doorway.

Havana and Colonial Towns

Havana is a natural starting point for a walking holiday. The compact streets of Old Havana are ideal for exploring on foot, with grand squares, historic churches and shaded arcades around almost every corner. Take your time between visits to museums and cafés, and you will soon get a feel for the city’s lively rhythm.

Further east, Trinidad offers a more intimate experience. Its cobbled lanes, pastel-coloured houses and surrounding countryside create some of Cuba’s most enjoyable walks. A local guide can bring the town’s history to life before leading you towards nearby viewpoints, farms and forested trails.

Mountains and Nature Trails

For a change of scenery, head into the Sierra del Escambray. The Topes de Collantes area has a network of paths through pine and tropical forest, with waterfalls, streams and impressive views across the hills. Routes vary from gentle walks to more demanding climbs, so there is plenty of choice for different levels of fitness.

February’s drier conditions are particularly welcome on natural trails, although sturdy footwear is still essential. Expect uneven ground, steps and the occasional muddy patch after rain. A local guide is useful for finding the best routes and spotting colourful birds and plants that are easy to miss.

Practical Tips for February

Daytime temperatures are usually pleasantly warm, but evenings and higher mountain areas can feel cooler. Pack lightweight clothing, a breathable waterproof layer, sun protection and a small rucksack for water and snacks. Good walking shoes are more important than smart footwear, particularly in historic centres with uneven cobbles.

Plan walks for the morning where possible, when the air is fresh and the light is excellent for photography. Leave time to rest over a long Cuban lunch or a freshly made fruit juice, then enjoy an easy afternoon exploring at your own pace. Whether you prefer culture, countryside or a mixture of both, February is a rewarding time to discover Cuba by walking.
