Curaçao in May

Caribbean Holidays, Curaçao in May, A sunny Curaçao coastline in May with turquoise water, rugged rocks and low green vegetation

Why Visit Curaçao in May?

May is a rewarding time to discover Curaçao, especially if you want warm weather, outdoor adventures and a more relaxed feel. The island is usually bright and dry, with daytime temperatures around 30°C and warm sea temperatures that make swimming easy at any time of day.

There is often a gentle breeze along the coast, taking the edge off the heat as you explore. Visitor numbers can be lower than during the busiest winter months, so beaches, nature reserves and local restaurants may feel pleasantly unhurried. It is a good month for travellers who prefer to explore at their own pace.

Explore the Island Outdoors

Curaçao’s landscape is wonderfully varied. Hire a car and head west towards Christoffel National Park, where marked trails lead through cactus-covered hills and dry woodland. Early morning is the best time to walk, before the strongest heat arrives, and the views from Mount Christoffel are well worth the climb.

For an easier outing, visit Shete Boka National Park on the island’s rugged north coast. Waves crash into natural inlets and sea caves, creating a dramatic contrast with the calm beaches on the southern shore. Wear sturdy shoes, take water and allow time to stop at the viewpoints.

Beaches and Snorkelling

May is ideal for enjoying Curaçao’s famous coves. Playa Kenepa, Cas Abao and Porto Marie all offer clear water, soft sand and excellent spots for a swim. Arrive earlier in the day for cooler temperatures and calmer conditions, then settle under the shade when the sun is at its strongest.

The island’s sheltered bays are also excellent for snorkelling. Look for colourful fish around the rocks and coral, or take a boat trip to quieter reefs and small uninhabited islets. Bring reef-safe sun cream, a reusable water bottle and a T-shirt for extra protection from the strong Caribbean sun.

Nature with Local Character

A holiday in Curaçao is not only about beaches and hiking. Spend time in Willemstad, where brightly painted waterfront buildings, historic lanes and lively cafés provide an enjoyable change of pace. The city’s harbour is particularly inviting in the late afternoon, when the light softens and the heat becomes easier to manage.

Try local dishes such as keshi yena or fresh seafood, and ask residents about quieter beaches and walking routes. May can also bring occasional short showers, but these are usually brief and can leave the air feeling fresh. With sensible planning, you can combine nature, culture and plenty of time beside the sea in one memorable Curaçao break.
