Dominican Adventure

Why Visit in February

February is an excellent time for a Dominican Republic adventure holiday. The weather is generally warm, bright and pleasantly dry, making it easier to spend your days outdoors without the intense heat of the summer months. Daytime temperatures are ideal for exploring, while the sea remains inviting for swimming and water sports.

This is also a lively month to visit. Carnival celebrations bring music, colourful costumes and energetic street performances to towns across the country, with La Vega particularly famous for its Sunday parades. You can enjoy the festive atmosphere before returning to a quieter beach or mountain retreat.

Jungle Trails and Waterfalls

For a real taste of the country’s wild side, head inland to the Cordillera Central or the northern hills around Puerto Plata. Guided walks lead through dense forest, across clear streams and towards waterfalls where you can cool off in natural pools. The scenery changes quickly, from broad valleys and coffee farms to steep, green slopes.

El Limón Waterfall, reached on foot or horseback near the Samaná Peninsula, is a memorable choice. The route takes you beneath palms and through countryside before opening onto a tall cascade surrounded by forest. Wear sturdy footwear, carry water and choose a local guide who knows the terrain.

Outdoor Adventures

February’s comfortable conditions are well suited to canyoning, river trips and mountain biking. Around Jarabacoa, you can paddle stretches of rushing river, try white-water rafting or take a guided canyoning excursion through narrow gorges. The area is known as the country’s adventure capital, but it still has a relaxed, welcoming feel.

Near Cabarete, the reliable coastal breeze attracts kiteboarders and windsurfers, while the beaches are perfect for a less demanding day in the sun. Beginners can book lessons with established schools, and experienced riders will find plenty of space to practise when conditions are favourable.

Sea, Caves and Wildlife

The Dominican Republic offers plenty of adventure beneath the surface as well as on land. Snorkelling and diving trips from Bayahibe, Punta Cana and the Samaná Peninsula reveal coral reefs, tropical fish and underwater rock formations. February is a good time to explore the clear coastal water, particularly on calm morning excursions.

For something different, visit Los Haitises National Park by boat. Its mangrove channels, limestone islands and hidden caves provide a fascinating glimpse of the country’s natural history. Keep an eye out for seabirds and listen to your guide’s stories about the Taino people who once used the caves.

Planning Your Trip

Adventure holidays in the Dominican Republic work best when you combine active days with time to rest. Choose a base that matches your plans: Samaná suits waterfalls and wildlife, Jarabacoa is best for mountain activities, and the north coast offers surfing, kiteboarding and easy access to beaches.

Book popular excursions ahead during February, especially around Carnival and school holiday periods. Use reputable operators, follow local safety advice and allow time for journeys, as mountain roads can be slow. With a little planning, you can enjoy a varied Caribbean escape filled with forest walks, warm seas, lively culture and plenty of stories to take home.
