Guadeloupe Walking

Why Visit in February

February is an excellent month for a Guadeloupe walking holiday. The weather is generally warm, bright and comfortable for exploring, while the island’s trade winds can take the edge off the midday heat. With less rain than many other times of year, trails are often in good condition and views across the mountains, forest and coast can be superb.

This is also a lively time to visit the French Caribbean. Depending on the dates, you may see colourful carnival celebrations, music and parades in local towns. It is easy to combine active days on the trails with relaxed evenings enjoying Creole food, fresh seafood and a swim in the warm Caribbean Sea.

Rainforest Trails

Basse-Terre is the natural choice for walkers, with Guadeloupe National Park covering much of the island’s mountainous western wing. Paths wind through thick rainforest, where giant ferns, palms and tropical trees create welcome shade. The sound of birds and running water often follows you as you climb deeper into the forest.

One of the most rewarding walks leads towards the Carbet Falls, a series of dramatic waterfalls surrounded by green slopes. Routes vary in length and difficulty, so you can choose a manageable outing or a more demanding hike. Good walking shoes are essential, as volcanic paths can be steep, muddy or uneven even during the drier February season.

Coastal Walks and Beaches

For easier walking, head towards Guadeloupe’s coast. The Grande-Terre wing has broad beaches, limestone cliffs and open countryside, while smaller paths around fishing villages reveal quiet coves and excellent sea views. A coastal walk can easily become a full day out when you add time for swimming or a picnic.

The Pointe des Châteaux is particularly memorable, with a rugged headland facing the Atlantic and a path leading to wide views over the surrounding islands. Start early or walk later in the afternoon to avoid the strongest sun. Carry water, as some exposed sections offer little shade.

Planning Your Walking Holiday

Guadeloupe offers a useful mix of independent trails, guided walks and comfortable places to stay. Base yourself in Basse-Terre for rainforest access, or choose Grande-Terre for beaches, restaurants and easier coastal routes. A hire car is helpful if you want to explore several trailheads, as public transport does not reach every rural walking area.

Pack lightweight clothing, a waterproof layer, sun protection and a small day bag. February is popular, so booking accommodation and any guided excursions ahead of time is sensible. With a little planning, you can spend your days discovering volcanic landscapes and your evenings enjoying the easy-going rhythm of this distinctive Caribbean island.
