Guadeloupe Walking

Why Walk Guadeloupe in December?

December is an excellent time for a Guadeloupe walking holiday. The islands are warm without feeling unbearably hot, while the wetter months have left the national park looking especially green and fresh. Expect daytime temperatures around 28°C, with cooler air in the hills and a pleasant breeze along the coast.

This is also a lively time to visit. Villages prepare for Christmas with lights, music and local celebrations, yet the walking routes still offer plenty of peace and space. A day can easily combine a morning hike through forest with a swim in the sea and dinner in a waterfront restaurant.

Coastal Walks and Beaches

Guadeloupe’s coastline gives you some of the easiest and most rewarding walks. On Grande-Terre, paths lead past sugar-cane fields, limestone headlands and wide Atlantic viewpoints. The Pointe des Châteaux is a memorable outing, with a short climb towards the cross and broad views over waves, rocky islands and the open Caribbean.

For a gentler day, explore the paths around Deshaies and the north-west coast of Basse-Terre. You can stop at a quiet beach, browse a small market or enjoy fresh fish before returning to your accommodation. December’s warm water makes it tempting to cool off after almost every walk.

Rainforest and Mountain Trails

Basse-Terre is the island for more adventurous walkers. Guadeloupe National Park contains dense rainforest, volcanic peaks and a network of trails ranging from easy woodland strolls to demanding mountain routes. The climb towards La Soufrière is one of the best-known walks, although conditions can change quickly at altitude.

Waterfall trails are another highlight. Routes near the Carbet Falls pass through giant ferns and lush vegetation, with the sound of rushing water accompanying much of the walk. Wear sturdy footwear, take water and check local advice, as paths can be slippery after rain even in December.

Local Life Along the Way

Walking is a wonderful way to experience more than Guadeloupe’s scenery. Along the routes you may pass roadside fruit stalls, old wooden houses, small churches and gardens filled with hibiscus and palms. Stop for a coconut drink, try accras or sample locally made rum punch when you have finished for the day.

December brings a particularly welcoming atmosphere. Look out for seasonal concerts, traditional food and evening gatherings in towns and villages. A friendly guide can add real depth to your trip, explaining the islands’ Creole culture, history and native plants as you walk.

Planning Your Walking Holiday

Choose accommodation that gives easy access to the areas you most want to explore. Staying on Basse-Terre suits rainforest and mountain walks, while Grande-Terre is convenient for beaches, coastal paths and lively resorts. Hiring a car is useful if you plan to visit several trailheads.

Pack breathable clothing, sun protection, insect repellent and a lightweight waterproof jacket. Start longer walks early, carry plenty of water and allow time for swimming or a relaxed Creole lunch. With a little preparation, a December walking holiday in Guadeloupe offers an ideal balance of active days, tropical scenery and genuine island hospitality.
