Puerto Rico Nature

April in Puerto Rico

April is an excellent month for a Puerto Rico nature holiday. The island is warm, colourful and easy to explore, with generally drier weather than the wetter months and plenty of sunshine for outdoor adventures. Daytime temperatures are often around 28°C, making it comfortable for walking, sightseeing and relaxing beside the sea.

Nature is one of Puerto Rico’s biggest attractions. In a single holiday, you can hike through rainforest, paddle across a bioluminescent bay, visit dry forest and watch seabirds along the coast. April also brings a lively atmosphere, while the island’s beaches remain tempting after a day of exploring.

Rainforest Adventures

El Yunque National Forest is the obvious starting point for nature lovers. Trails lead through dense greenery to viewpoints, streams and waterfalls, and the air feels noticeably cooler beneath the canopy. Choose a gentle walk to La Coca Falls or plan a longer hike if you want a more active day among the mountain scenery.

April is a particularly pleasant time to visit El Yunque, as the paths can be easier underfoot than during the wetter season. Wear sturdy shoes, carry water and allow time to stop for the sounds of tree frogs and tropical birds. A local guide can add useful insight into the forest’s plants, wildlife and conservation work.

Glowing Night Waters

For a truly memorable evening, take a guided kayak trip on one of Puerto Rico’s bioluminescent bays. Tiny marine organisms create flashes of blue-green light as the water moves, so each paddle stroke seems to leave a glowing trail. The experience is at its best on a moonless night, when the darkness makes the natural effect easier to see.

Trips usually take place in calm mangrove channels and are suitable for most reasonably active travellers. Listen carefully to your guide, who will explain how this fragile ecosystem works and why responsible tourism matters. Booking ahead is sensible, particularly around Easter and other busy April dates.

Coasts and Wildlife

Puerto Rico’s coastline offers more than beautiful beaches. Head towards the quieter areas of the west or south for coastal walks, rocky viewpoints and excellent swimming conditions. Nearby nature reserves provide opportunities to see iguanas, shorebirds and other wildlife, while boat trips can reveal hidden coves and offshore islands.

April is also a good month for combining nature with local culture. After a morning outdoors, enjoy fresh seafood, wander through a historic town or watch the sunset from a small beach bar. With warm weather, varied landscapes and plenty of guided activities, Puerto Rico makes it easy to create a nature holiday that feels both adventurous and relaxed.
