Saint Lucia Adventures

Why Visit in December

December is an excellent time for a Saint Lucia adventure holiday. The island is warm, bright and lively, with daytime temperatures usually sitting around 28°C. After the wetter months, the landscape is wonderfully green, while the sea is inviting for swimming, sailing and watersports.

There is also a great atmosphere as Christmas approaches. Resorts and villages begin to look festive, but Saint Lucia still feels relaxed and naturally beautiful. You can spend one day exploring the rainforest and the next enjoying a quiet beach, with plenty of time to experience the island at your own pace.

Hiking the Pitons

For many visitors, climbing Gros Piton is the highlight of a Saint Lucia adventure holiday. The guided trail winds through tropical vegetation, passing banana trees, villages and viewpoints that become increasingly impressive as you gain height. It is a challenging walk, so sensible footwear, water and a reasonable level of fitness are important.

If you prefer a shorter outing, there are plenty of rainforest trails and scenic walks around Soufrière. A local guide can explain the plants, wildlife and history of the area, turning a walk into a much richer experience. Start early to enjoy cooler conditions and clearer views before the midday heat.

Adventures on Water

Saint Lucia’s coastline is ideal for active days on the water. Kayak along sheltered bays, join a sailing trip or try paddleboarding in calm turquoise sea. The west coast is particularly attractive, with dramatic scenery and excellent places to stop for a swim.

Snorkelling trips reveal colourful fish around rocky coves and reefs, while experienced divers can explore deeper underwater sites. December often brings good visibility, although sea conditions can vary. Choose a reputable operator that supplies well-maintained equipment and listens carefully to local weather advice.

Rainforest and Volcano Experiences

Near Soufrière, you can visit the world’s only drive-in volcano at Sulphur Springs. The bubbling pools and volcanic landscape are fascinating, and many tours combine a visit with a soak in a nearby mineral-rich mud bath. It is a memorable way to experience the island’s geology without a demanding hike.

Waterfalls provide another enjoyable adventure. Walk through the forest to reach refreshing pools beneath the falls, then take time to enjoy the peaceful surroundings. Bring swimwear, insect repellent and shoes with a good grip, as paths can be uneven even in the drier December season.

Planning Your Trip

Book popular excursions in advance, especially around Christmas and New Year when demand is higher. Look for trips led by local guides, as their knowledge adds context and helps you discover quieter spots. Private tours can offer greater flexibility, while small-group excursions are often sociable and good value.

Pack light clothing, sun protection, a reusable water bottle and a compact waterproof bag. With mountain trails, rainforest, volcanic springs and beautiful beaches all within reach, December in Saint Lucia is perfect for travellers who want more than simply relaxing beside a pool.
