December Adventures

Why Visit in December?

December is an excellent time for an adventure holiday in Saint Martin and Sint Maarten. The islands are warm, bright and lively, with daytime temperatures usually sitting around 28°C. It is a welcome escape from the colder weather in the United Kingdom, particularly if you enjoy spending your days outdoors.

Saint Martin and Sint Maarten share one small island, but each side has its own character. French Saint-Martin is known for relaxed villages, excellent food and scenic coastal paths, while Dutch Sint Maarten offers a busy waterfront, water sports and a lively holiday atmosphere. Travelling between the two is easy, so you can enjoy both during the same trip.

Water Adventures

The warm Caribbean Sea makes December ideal for getting active on the water. Try kayaking along the coast, where calm bays and rocky headlands create plenty of interesting routes. Paddleboarding is another enjoyable option, especially in the quieter morning hours when the sea is often at its smoothest.

Snorkelling trips reveal colourful fish around shallow reefs, and boat excursions can take you to nearby islands such as Pinel Island or Tintamarre. If you are looking for more excitement, book a sailing trip, try windsurfing or take to the water on a guided jet-ski tour. Local operators can usually arrange equipment and instruction for beginners.

Walks and Island Views

Hiking is a rewarding way to see a quieter side of the island. Trails around Pic Paradis climb through tropical vegetation to some of the best viewpoints in Saint Martin. The routes can be steep in places, but the views across the coastline and neighbouring islands make the effort worthwhile.

For a gentler outing, explore the paths around the nature reserve at the island’s eastern end. Keep an eye out for lizards, tropical birds and butterflies as you walk. Wear sturdy footwear, take plenty of water and set out earlier in the day, before the midday heat becomes too strong.

Evenings After Adventure

December brings a cheerful atmosphere to the island, with restaurants, beach bars and waterfront areas becoming especially inviting in the evenings. After a day on the trail or in the sea, settle down to fresh seafood, French-Caribbean dishes or local specialities such as conch and johnny cakes.

It is worth booking popular restaurants and activities in advance, as the festive season can be busy. Even so, there are plenty of quieter beaches and laid-back villages where you can slow down and enjoy the island at your own pace. A December adventure holiday in Saint Martin and Sint Maarten gives you the best of both worlds: active days, warm seas and plenty of time to relax.
