May Holidays

A Lively May Escape

May is a rewarding time to visit Saint Martin and Sint Maarten. The island is warm, bright and full of character, while the busy winter season has begun to ease. You can spend the morning on a beautiful beach, then wander through historic streets, sample local food and settle into a relaxed evening by the sea.

Although Saint Martin and Sint Maarten share one island, they offer two distinct cultural experiences. The French side is known for its cafés, galleries and polished seaside villages, while the Dutch side brings a lively mix of nightlife, shopping and international influences. Crossing between them is simple, so a May holiday can easily include the best of both.

Beaches Without Crowds

May is ideal for enjoying the island’s coastline at your own pace. Orient Bay has a broad stretch of sand and plenty of places to stop for lunch, while Grand Case is a good choice for a swim followed by a memorable meal. For a more peaceful setting, look towards Anse Marcel or Friar’s Bay, where the atmosphere is generally calm and unhurried.

The sea is inviting at this time of year, and the warmer weather suits all kinds of water activities. Try paddleboarding, kayaking or a boat trip to nearby coves and islands. If you prefer to stay dry, find a shaded spot with a good book and watch the changing colours of the water.

Food, Music And Local Life

Food is one of the great reasons to visit Saint Martin and Sint Maarten in May. French pastries and seafood sit comfortably alongside Creole stews, Dutch snacks and Caribbean barbecue. Grand Case is particularly well known for its restaurants, but excellent meals can be found in beach bars, family-run kitchens and waterfront cafés across the island.

May also offers a chance to experience local life beyond the main tourist areas. Listen for live music in small bars, browse craft stalls and chat with residents at relaxed seaside gatherings. The island’s cultural mix is best appreciated slowly, with time to enjoy a coffee, a rum punch or a plate of freshly prepared food.

Explore Both Sides

Begin in Marigot, where the waterfront market, colourful shops and Fort Louis provide an easy introduction to French Saint Martin. Walk up to the fort for wide views across the bay, then return to town for lunch and a little browsing. The pace is relaxed, but there is plenty to discover if you enjoy exploring on foot.

On the Dutch side, Philipsburg combines a long beach with a lively shopping street and a handsome boardwalk. You can visit historic sites, look for local souvenirs or simply watch boats arrive in the harbour. With warm days, varied dining and a friendly atmosphere, May is a fine month for discovering the island’s two personalities in one holiday.
