February City Breaks

Caribbean Holidays, February City Breaks, Colourful Carnival costumes and musicians parading through the streets of Port of Spain, Trinidad, in bright February sunshine

Carnival in Port of Spain

February is one of the most exciting times to take a city break in Trinidad and Tobago, especially if you base yourself in Port of Spain. The city comes alive for Carnival, with music, dancing and colourful costumes filling the streets. Even if you are not joining a parade, you will feel the energy in cafés, markets and neighbourhoods across the capital.

Plan ahead if Carnival is the main reason for your visit, as hotels and flights can become busy well in advance. A knowledgeable local guide can help you find the best events, from lively calypso performances to the spectacular masquerade parades. Pack comfortable shoes, light clothing and plenty of enthusiasm, because the celebrations often continue long after sunset.

Explore the Capital

Port of Spain offers much more than Carnival. Start with a walk around the city centre, where historic buildings sit alongside shops, galleries and relaxed restaurants. The Red House, Independence Square and the lively Brian Lara Promenade provide an easy introduction to Trinidad’s history and everyday atmosphere.

For a quieter break, visit the Royal Botanic Gardens or stroll through nearby Queen’s Park Savannah. You can stop for a local snack, watch cricket or simply enjoy the warm February weather. The city is compact enough to explore at a gentle pace, while taxis and organised excursions make it straightforward to reach attractions further afield.

A Taste of Tobago

If you have time, combine your Port of Spain stay with a few nights in Tobago. The short flight between the islands makes it easy to swap city streets for forested hills, sandy beaches and clear Caribbean water. Crown Point is convenient for restaurants and nightlife, while quieter coastal areas offer a more peaceful setting.

February is a good month for swimming, snorkelling and boat trips, with warm temperatures and generally settled conditions. You could spend the morning exploring coral reefs, enjoy fresh seafood for lunch and watch the sun set over the coast in the evening. Tobago adds a relaxed beach finish to an energetic Trinidad city break.

Food, Music and Warmth

Food is an important part of any February holiday in Trinidad and Tobago. Try doubles, a popular breakfast of curried chickpeas in flatbread, or sample roti, pelau and fresh seafood at local restaurants and food stalls. The flavours are varied, generous and closely linked to the islands’ rich mix of cultures.

Music is just as central to the experience. Calypso, soca and steelpan can be heard throughout Carnival season, giving even an ordinary evening a real sense of occasion. With friendly people, plenty of sunshine and a choice of city excitement or beach relaxation, Trinidad and Tobago makes an unforgettable February city break.
