For bold colour and lively character, head to Port of Spain. The capital is especially photogenic during Carnival, when elaborate costumes, steelpan music and energetic dancing fill the streets. Every corner seems to offer a new combination of feathers, sequins and bright Caribbean style.

Outside Carnival season, you can still find excellent photographs around the city’s historic buildings, markets and green spaces. The Red House and Queen’s Park Savannah are particularly good places to explore with a camera, combining Trinidadian culture with distinctive architecture and open views.

Pitch Lake Adventure

Pitch Lake at La Brea is one of Trinidad’s most unusual Instagram locations. This enormous natural asphalt lake has a dark, textured surface that looks unlike almost anywhere else in the Caribbean. Guided walks explain how the lake formed and point out the small pools and plants that survive in this remarkable environment.

The landscape is best photographed with plenty of detail in the frame, so capture the changing textures beneath your feet as well as the wider view. Wear comfortable shoes and follow local guidance, as some areas can be uneven or soft.

Nature lovers should make time for Tobago’s rainforest trails. The route to Argyle Waterfall leads through rich greenery before opening onto a cool cascade and clear pools. The contrast between deep forest and sparkling water makes this a memorable place for holiday photos.
