January Diving Conditions

January is an excellent time for a scuba diving holiday in Puerto Rico. The island enjoys warm weather, comfortable sea temperatures and generally good visibility, making it easy to enjoy both relaxed reef dives and more adventurous underwater trips. It is also a welcome escape from the colder weather in the United Kingdom.

Water temperatures commonly sit around 26°C, so many divers are comfortable in a light wetsuit. Visibility varies by location and recent weather, but can often reach 18 to 30 metres on a good day. January is part of the island’s drier season, although brief showers can still pass through, particularly in the mountains.

Where To Dive

Puerto Rico offers a pleasing mix of dive sites around its coastline and nearby islands. On the south coast, La Parguera is known for sheltered waters, colourful reefs and interesting walls. The area is well suited to divers who want scenic, varied dives without long journeys offshore.

For a memorable day trip, consider the islands of Vieques or Culebra. Their clear water, healthy coral and quieter beaches create a wonderfully relaxed setting. Desecheo Island, off the west coast near Rincón, is another popular choice, with reef formations, drop-offs and the chance to see larger marine life.

Marine Life Encounters

Underwater Puerto Rico is full of movement and colour. Depending on the site, you may see green and hawksbill turtles, southern stingrays, nurse sharks, moray eels and large schools of reef fish. Parrotfish, angelfish and wrasse add bright flashes of colour as they move across the coral.

January can also bring encounters with visiting humpback whales in deeper waters, although sightings are never guaranteed and are usually enjoyed from a boat rather than during a dive. Even without a dramatic encounter, the reefs provide plenty to discover, from tiny seahorses and crabs to sponges and waving sea fans.

Planning Your Dive Holiday

Most dive centres can arrange equipment hire, guided dives and boat trips for a range of experience levels. If you are a beginner, Puerto Rico has calm areas where you can complete an introductory experience or continue your training. Certified divers can choose from shallow reef dives, wall dives, wrecks and deeper sites.

Book popular January trips ahead of time, particularly if your holiday includes weekends or a visit to Culebra and Vieques. Bring certification details, reef-safe sun cream and a light jacket for boat journeys. Allow plenty of time between your final dive and flying home, following the advice of your dive operator.
