Where to Dive

Some of Puerto Rico’s best-known diving is found around the west coast, particularly near La Parguera, Guánica and Rincón. These areas offer calm bays, colourful reefs and clear offshore sites, often with plenty of tropical fish moving between the coral.

Vieques and Culebra are also excellent choices for underwater adventures. Their protected waters can be especially inviting for beginners, while the islands’ quieter beaches and laid-back character make them ideal for combining diving with a peaceful beach holiday.

Marine Life

Puerto Rico’s reefs are home to parrotfish, angelfish, wrasse and bright damselfish, while larger visitors may include rays, barracuda and sea turtles. On a slow dive, you can spot tiny seahorses, colourful crabs and unusual reef creatures hiding among the coral.

Seasonal conditions can bring even more excitement. Humpback whales pass offshore during the winter months, particularly around the west coast, although sightings are never guaranteed. The best approach is to take your time, keep your eyes moving and let the reef reveal its details.

Planning Your Dive

Local dive operators offer introductory experiences, guided dives and internationally recognised certification courses. If you have never tried scuba diving, a resort or beach-based discovery session is a comfortable way to learn the basics before heading out by boat.

Certified divers should bring their logbook and certification card, and it is worth checking equipment availability when booking. Most centres provide tanks, weights and hire equipment, while some can arrange transfers from nearby hotels. Conditions vary by coast, so ask your instructor which sites best match your experience.
