Start in San Juan
January is an excellent time for a Puerto Rico backpacking holiday. The weather is generally warm and comfortable, with less oppressive humidity than later in the year, while the island’s lively atmosphere makes it easy to meet other travellers. Begin in San Juan, where historic streets, beaches, music and excellent food are all within easy reach.
Stay in or near Old San Juan for a few nights and explore on foot. Wander past bright Spanish colonial buildings, climb towards Castillo San Felipe del Morro and pause in a shaded square with a coffee or a cold drink. When evening arrives, follow the sound of salsa from a small bar, or try local favourites such as mofongo, alcapurrias and fresh seafood.
