February is an excellent month for a Puerto Rico backpacking holiday. The weather is warm, rainfall is usually manageable and the island has a lively atmosphere without feeling as busy as the main summer season. Daytime temperatures often sit around 27°C, making it comfortable to explore on foot, swim in the sea or travel between towns.

Pack light clothing, sturdy walking shoes and a light waterproof jacket for short tropical showers. Old San Juan is compact enough to discover on foot, with historic forts, independent cafés and small restaurants tucked along its cobbled streets. Walk up to Castillo San Felipe del Morro for broad views across the Atlantic and the city walls.

When the sun goes down, San Juan becomes even more enjoyable for backpackers. Try local favourites such as mofongo, rice with pigeon peas and fresh seafood, then listen to live music in Santurce or Condado. Hostels, guesthouses and budget hotels provide a useful base for meeting other travellers and arranging island excursions.

Public buses are useful in San Juan, while hiring a car or joining a small tour makes it easier to reach remote beaches and mountain villages.

For a memorable extension, consider a boat trip to Vieques or Culebra. These islands offer clear water, excellent snorkelling and a slower pace, while Vieques is also known for its bioluminescent bay. February’s bright days and warm sea temperatures make it a superb time to swim, paddle and enjoy Puerto Rico’s Caribbean scenery.
