Start in San Juan
Puerto Rico is an excellent choice for a Caribbean backpacking holiday, combining lively cities, generous local culture and easy access to beaches, rainforest and mountains. Begin in San Juan, where you can spend your first few days finding your bearings, trying mofongo and watching the Atlantic waves roll against the old city walls.
Old San Juan is compact enough to explore on foot, with cobbled lanes, brightly painted buildings and historic forts around almost every corner. Stay in a hostel or simple guesthouse, then use local buses, shared rides or affordable taxis to reach other parts of the capital. The neighbourhoods outside the old town offer a more everyday view of Puerto Rican life, with busy cafés, music and excellent food.
