St Thomas

St Thomas is the best choice if you like a holiday with plenty happening. Charlotte Amalie has a lively waterfront, historic streets and shops, while the island’s steep hills provide memorable views across the harbour and neighbouring islands.

For beach time, head to Magens Bay, one of the Caribbean’s most recognisable stretches of sand. St John Nature

St John feels quieter and more natural than its larger neighbour. Much of the island is protected within Virgin Islands National Park, where forested hills lead down to secluded coves, coral reefs and clear bays.

Trunk Bay is famous for its underwater snorkelling trail, but it is worth exploring beyond the headline beaches too. Take a water taxi from St Thomas, walk one of the island’s scenic trails or spend an unhurried afternoon swimming in a sheltered bay. St Croix Culture

St Croix has a different rhythm, with a broader landscape, strong local traditions and a fascinating history. Christiansted and Frederiksted both have colourful historic buildings, old fortifications and waterfront restaurants where you can enjoy fresh seafood and a cool drink.

The island is also a good base for diving, fishing and discovering quieter beaches. You can visit a rum distillery, learn about local craft, or simply drive through the countryside and stop wherever the view takes your interest. The dry season, generally from December to April, is popular for sunshine and comfortable temperatures, although the islands are enjoyable throughout much of the year. Peak periods can be busy, so booking accommodation and popular excursions early is sensible.

Island-hopping is possible by ferry, taxi boat or short flight, depending on your route. Whether you choose one island or combine two, allow time to slow down. A typical day might include a swim before breakfast, a local lunch, an afternoon on the water and dinner overlooking the sea.
