Explore Saint Thomas

Saint Thomas is a great starting point for a solo holiday. Charlotte Amalie combines historic streets, attractive waterfront views and independent shops, while the island’s winding roads lead to scenic viewpoints such as Mountain Top. From here, you can look across brilliant blue water towards nearby islands and watch boats moving through the harbour.

Getting around is straightforward with taxis, organised excursions and car hire available. Join a boat trip to snorkel in clear bays, take a day cruise to a nearby island or simply settle into a beach café with a good book. The popular shores of Magens Bay are ideal for swimming, while smaller coves offer a quieter escape.

Island calm on Saint John

For a more peaceful atmosphere, make time for Saint John. Much of the island is protected as Virgin Islands National Park, creating a wonderful setting for nature walks, swimming and snorkelling. Trails pass through dry forest and green hills before opening onto beaches where the water is clear enough to see fish close to shore.

Trunk Bay is famous for its underwater snorkelling trail, while beaches such as Maho Bay are known for calm water and the chance of spotting turtles. Cruz Bay has a relaxed selection of restaurants and bars, making it easy to enjoy a meal and meet other travellers without needing a busy nightlife scene.

A different pace on Saint Croix

Saint Croix has its own character and is well suited to travellers who enjoy history, food and local culture. Wander through the colourful streets of Christiansted, visit historic forts and sample island cooking at a waterside restaurant. Frederiksted offers another inviting base, with a laid-back atmosphere and beautiful sunsets.

Days can include a visit to a rum distillery, a snorkelling trip or a drive through the countryside. The island is larger and less compact than Saint Thomas or Saint John, so hiring a car can be useful if you want to explore independently.

The best time for a U.S. Virgin Islands solo holiday is generally from December to April, when the weather is pleasantly warm and rainfall is lower. The summer months can be quieter and often offer good value, although you should check seasonal weather information before booking.
