Discover Underwater

Scuba diving in the U.S. Virgin Islands gives you the chance to explore warm Caribbean water, lively coral reefs and fascinating underwater landscapes. Whether you are a complete beginner or an experienced diver, the islands offer an enjoyable mix of easy shore dives, boat trips and memorable marine encounters.

St Thomas, St John and St Croix each have their own character beneath the surface. Visibility is often excellent, the water remains pleasantly warm for much of the year, and local dive centres make it simple to arrange equipment, guides and training. It is an ideal way to add adventure to a relaxing beach holiday.

Dive Around St Thomas

St Thomas is a popular base for scuba diving, with dive sites close to the island and plenty of operators offering trips for different experience levels. Around the southern coastline, divers can find reefs, rocky outcrops and gentle drop-offs where angelfish, parrotfish and barracuda are commonly seen.

Boat excursions often reach nearby cays and deeper sites, giving qualified divers more variety. Beginners are well catered for too, with introductory dives and sheltered locations where an instructor can help you feel comfortable underwater. After a morning in the sea, Charlotte Amalie is close by for lunch, shopping or a stroll through its historic streets.

St John’s Reefs

Much of St John is protected within the Virgin Islands National Park, and that care is reflected in its beautiful marine environment. The waters around the island are known for clear conditions, healthy coral areas and quiet bays that are especially appealing for relaxed diving and snorkelling.

Look out for sea turtles gliding over the reef, rays resting on sandy patches and shoals of bright reef fish moving between the coral. St John feels less developed than St Thomas, so a dive here can be combined with a peaceful day on the beach or a scenic drive through the island’s green hills.

Explore St Croix

St Croix is a rewarding choice for divers who want variety, with reefs, wrecks, walls and unusual underwater formations. Frederiksted and Christiansted provide access to different sites, while the island’s deeper waters can offer exciting conditions for more experienced divers.

Wreck diving is one of St Croix’s highlights, with sunken vessels now providing shelter for marine life. Local guides know the sites well and can recommend suitable dives according to your qualifications, the weather and your interests. The island also has a relaxed atmosphere, making it easy to enjoy unhurried evenings after time on the water.

Plan Your Dive Holiday

Most reputable dive centres provide full equipment hire, guided trips and courses from beginner level upwards. If you are already qualified, bring your certification details and allow time between your final dive and flying. A local operator can also advise on the best sites for the season and current sea conditions.

For a comfortable holiday, combine diving with plenty of time to rest, explore the islands and enjoy the beaches. The U.S. Virgin Islands make it easy to mix underwater adventure with good food, friendly hospitality and spectacular Caribbean scenery, creating a diving holiday you will remember long after you return home.
