Bonaire by Bicycle

Bonaire is the easiest of the three islands for a cycling-focused escape, with a network of roads leading through dry tropical landscapes and along the coast. Routes around Kralendijk are generally straightforward, while longer rides can take you towards the southern salt works or north towards Rincon.

The southern route is especially rewarding. You may pass bright white salt pyramids, old slave huts and shallow lagoons where flamingos feed. The roads are often exposed, so set off early, carry plenty of water and take advantage of the breeze when it arrives. A hybrid or mountain bike is useful for exploring less-travelled tracks.

Statia’s Historic Routes

Sint Eustatius, often known as Statia, offers a more compact and quietly atmospheric cycling experience. Its historic capital, Oranjestad, sits beside the sea and is surrounded by old warehouses, churches and fortifications. A gentle ride through town can easily be combined with time at Fort Oranje and the waterfront.

Beyond the historic centre, the island rises towards The Quill, a green volcanic peak. Some roads are hilly, so cyclists should be comfortable with climbs and changing surfaces. The reward is a peaceful landscape, broad sea views and the feeling of discovering a Caribbean island well away from the crowds.

Saba for Active Riders

Saba is best suited to experienced and adventurous cyclists. Known for steep terrain, narrow roads and dramatic scenery, it is not a destination for effortless flat rides. Instead, it appeals to visitors who enjoy a challenge and want to combine cycling with hiking, diving or exploring small island communities.

The famous road known as The Road links Saba’s villages through a series of bends and climbs. Ride at a comfortable pace, allow extra time and be prepared for sudden changes in weather at higher elevations. Even a short outing can provide spectacular views across the Caribbean and a real sense of achievement.

Planning Your July Trip

July is hot across the BES islands, so lightweight clothing, sun protection and a refillable water bottle are essential. Plan longer rides for the morning, when temperatures are more manageable, and leave afternoons for swimming, snorkelling or a leisurely lunch.

Check bike hire and transport arrangements before travelling, particularly if you want to visit more than one island.
