Curacao Fishing

Fishing in Curaçao

Curaçao is a brilliant choice for a fishing holiday, whether you are an experienced angler or simply fancy trying something different during a Caribbean break. The island sits in warm, clear waters where reef fish, game fish and larger pelagic species can all be found. Calm seas and plenty of sunshine make time on the water enjoyable throughout much of the year.

Most fishing trips leave from the southern coast, often close to Willemstad and the island’s popular beach resorts. As you head away from the harbour, the colourful buildings quickly give way to open sea, rugged coastline and small, uninhabited islets. It is an easy way to see Curaçao from a different angle while enjoying the excitement of the next catch.

What You Can Catch

Inshore fishing around Curaçao can produce snapper, grouper, barracuda and other reef species. These waters are attractive for their variety, and the clear visibility often lets you see flashes of fish below the boat. Some trips combine fishing with snorkelling, giving non-anglers a chance to enjoy the same outing.

For a more adventurous experience, choose a deep-sea fishing charter. Depending on the season and conditions, anglers may look for wahoo, mahi-mahi, tuna and marlin in deeper water beyond the reefs. The crew will normally explain the equipment and techniques, so you do not need to arrive with specialist knowledge.

Choosing a Fishing Charter

Local charter operators offer half-day, full-day and private fishing excursions. A half-day trip suits first-time visitors or families who want to leave time for the beach, while a full-day charter allows the boat to reach more distant fishing grounds. Private trips provide greater flexibility and are useful when a group has different interests.

When comparing charters, check what is included in the price. Rods, reels, bait, licences, refreshments and fishing tackle are often supplied, but arrangements for cleaning or keeping the catch can vary. It is also worth asking about group size, departure times and whether the trip is suitable for children or anyone prone to seasickness.

Planning Your Day

Book popular fishing trips before travelling, particularly during school holidays and the drier winter months. Early departures are common because the sea is often calmer and fish can be more active in the cooler morning hours. Wear light clothing that can get wet, bring sun protection and take a waterproof bag for phones and valuables.

Even if the fish are not biting, a Curaçao fishing trip is a memorable day out. You may spot flying fish, seabirds or dolphins, and the views of the coast are excellent from offshore. Add a charter to your holiday plans for a relaxed, hands-on way to experience the island’s warm Caribbean waters.
