Martinique Diving May

Why Dive Martinique in May?

May is an excellent month for a Martinique scuba diving holiday. The island is warm, the sea is inviting and the busy winter season has started to ease, giving you more space both above and below the water. Water temperatures are usually around 27°C, so a lightweight wetsuit is generally all you need.

Visibility can be impressive, often reaching 20 metres or more when conditions are settled. Around the sheltered western and southern coasts, divers may find calm seas, volcanic scenery and a good variety of marine life. May also brings a relaxed atmosphere to beach resorts, making it easy to combine morning dives with lazy afternoons by the sea.

What You Can See Underwater

Martinique’s underwater landscape is shaped by its volcanic origins. Rocky pinnacles, reef walls, caves and sandy patches create habitats for colourful reef fish, moray eels, lobsters and graceful rays. Keep an eye on the reef rather than only looking into the blue, as camouflaged scorpionfish, seahorses and small crabs can be surprisingly easy to miss.

Experienced divers may enjoy deeper sites around the Caribbean coast, while newer divers can choose sheltered reefs and bays with gentler conditions. Boat trips often visit several sites in one outing, giving you the chance to experience different depths and underwater scenery without long journeys from shore.

Best Areas for Scuba Diving

Les Anses-d’Arlet is a popular base for diving, with attractive coves, clear water and a friendly village feel. The area suits both beginners and experienced divers, and its position on the south-west coast makes it convenient for exploring a range of nearby sites.

Saint-Pierre, on the north-west coast, offers a different experience. This historic town sits beneath Mount Pelée and is known for dramatic underwater landscapes, including wrecks and deeper volcanic sites. Local dive centres can advise on current conditions and match excursions to your certification and experience.

Planning Your May Diving Holiday

Choose a reputable PADI or CMAS dive centre and book early if you want particular dates or specialist trips. May can be a good-value period, but availability varies around local holidays and school breaks. Bring proof of certification, and allow enough time between your final dive and any flight home.

Outside the water, Martinique offers plenty to fill your days. Visit a rum distillery, explore Fort-de-France, hike through rainforest or simply settle into a beachside restaurant for fresh fish and Creole flavours. With warm weather, welcoming communities and rewarding diving, Martinique in May makes an excellent choice for an easy-going Caribbean escape.
