Martinique in August

Martinique beach holidays in August are all about warm seas, easy-going days and the freedom to explore at your own pace. This French Caribbean island combines beautiful coastline with colourful towns, mountain scenery and a distinctive Creole culture, so there is plenty to enjoy when you want a break from the beach.

Temperatures are typically around 30°C during the day, while the sea remains wonderfully warm for swimming. August falls within the wetter season, so you may see short tropical showers, but these often pass quickly and leave the air feeling fresh. It is wise to pack light waterproofs alongside your swimwear and sun cream.

Beaches and Swimming

Martinique has a beach for almost every mood. The south is known for calm, inviting bays such as Anse Dufour and Anse Noire, where clear water is ideal for swimming and snorkelling. Les Salines, close to Sainte-Anne, is one of the island’s most famous stretches of sand, backed by coconut palms and a pleasant coastal walking trail.

On the west coast, Anse à l’Ane and Grande Anse d’Arlet offer relaxed seaside settings with restaurants and simple beach facilities nearby. August is a good time to get into the water early, before the strongest heat of the day. Always check local conditions, particularly on more exposed Atlantic beaches, where waves and currents can be stronger.

Island Life and Food

There is more to a Martinique holiday than sunbathing. Take a boat trip from the south coast, visit the lively market in Fort-de-France or wander through the streets of Saint-Pierre, the historic town overlooked by Mount Pelée. A scenic drive can reveal quiet coves, sugar-cane fields and viewpoints across the Caribbean Sea.

Food is another highlight. Look out for grilled fish, accras de morue, chicken colombo and fresh tropical fruit, ideally enjoyed at a waterside restaurant with a chilled ti’ punch for the adults. French influences mean you will also find excellent bread, pastries and coffee, making breakfast a particularly enjoyable part of the day.

Planning Your August Trip

August is popular with families and visitors from France, so booking accommodation and car hire early is sensible. A hire car makes it much easier to reach quieter beaches and explore beyond your resort, although local buses and taxis can work well for shorter journeys.

Choose a base near Sainte-Anne for classic beaches and a relaxed atmosphere, or consider Trois-Îlets for a wider choice of restaurants, activities and access to Fort-de-France. Wherever you stay, Martinique in August offers a rewarding mix of warm Caribbean water, memorable food and genuine island character.
