Martinique March Holidays

Caribbean Holidays, Martinique March Holidays, Backpacker with a small rucksack walking along a sunny Martinique beach, turquoise sea, palm trees and volcanic hills in the distance

Why Visit Martinique in March?

March is an excellent month for Martinique backpacking holidays. The island is warm, bright and generally drier than the wetter months, with daytime temperatures often around 28°C. Sea breezes keep the coast comfortable, while the Caribbean water stays invitingly warm for swimming, snorkelling and paddleboarding.

Travelling in March also gives you a good balance between lively local life and quieter corners. You can enjoy the colourful streets of Fort-de-France, then escape to a small fishing village or a forest trail without feeling hurried. Pack light clothing, a light waterproof jacket and reliable sun protection, as short showers can still arrive, especially in the north.

Start in Fort-de-France

Fort-de-France is a practical and entertaining starting point for a backpacking trip. Wander through the Grand Marché to browse spices, fruit, handmade crafts and bottles of local rum, then pause at a café for a strong coffee or a simple Creole lunch. The city is compact enough to explore on foot, with plenty of character in its busy squares and waterfront streets.

Do not miss La Savane, a spacious park near the bay, or the striking Sacré-Cœur de la Balata, which sits above the city with impressive views. Local buses can take you to nearby beaches, although taxis and organised day trips are useful when you want to cover more ground. Staying in a guesthouse or small hotel around the city can make it easier to meet other travellers.

Explore the North

Northern Martinique feels greener, wilder and more dramatic than the south. Experienced walkers can head towards Mount Pelée, the island’s famous volcano, where clear March mornings may offer superb views. Trails can be steep and muddy after rain, so wear proper walking shoes and check local conditions before setting out.

For a gentler adventure, explore the rainforest around the Cascade Saut Gendarme or visit the historic town of Saint-Pierre. Once known as the “Paris of the Caribbean”, Saint-Pierre was destroyed by the 1902 eruption, and its ruins tell an absorbing story. The nearby black-sand beaches and mountain backdrop make this a memorable stop for independent travellers.

Beaches and Island Flavours

The southern coast is ideal when you want easy beach days between excursions. Anse Dufour and Anse Noire are small, beautiful coves where snorkellers may spot colourful fish and sea turtles. Sainte-Anne and Les Salines offer broader stretches of sand, warm shallows and space to settle down with a book.

Food is a major part of the experience. Look for roadside stalls serving accras, grilled fish, chicken colombo and fresh fruit juices, and try a ti’ punch if you enjoy rum. A flexible itinerary works best: spend one day hiking, the next swimming, and leave room for conversations with local people. With sensible planning, March is a rewarding time for an affordable and memorable Martinique backpacking holiday.
