Martinique December

Why Visit in December

December is an excellent time for Martinique backpacking holidays. The island is warm, lively and easy to explore, with daytime temperatures usually sitting around 28°C. After the wetter months, the weather is generally brighter, although a short tropical shower can still pass through and leave the air fresh.

There is a particularly enjoyable atmosphere in December. Christmas preparations bring music, markets and local events to towns and villages, while the beaches remain wonderfully relaxed. You can spend the morning swimming in clear water, the afternoon hiking through rainforest and the evening enjoying Creole food in a small waterfront restaurant.

Start in Fort-de-France

Fort-de-France is a practical and fascinating starting point for backpackers. The city has affordable guesthouses, useful transport links and plenty of places to eat on a budget. Wander through the covered market to see baskets of mangoes, pineapples, spices and brightly coloured flowers, then take a slow walk around the historic centre.

Do not miss La Savane, a leafy park close to the waterfront, or the impressive Schoelcher Library. From the city, local buses and ferries make it possible to reach nearby coastal areas without hiring a car for your entire trip. Staying a few nights here also gives you time to settle into the island’s relaxed pace.

Adventure in the North

For a taste of wild Martinique, head north towards the slopes of Mount Pelée. The landscape becomes greener and more dramatic, with volcanic scenery, dense forest and small villages surrounded by sugar cane and banana plantations. Experienced walkers can tackle mountain trails, while shorter routes lead to waterfalls and scenic viewpoints.

Saint-Pierre is an especially worthwhile stop. Once the island’s capital, it is now a peaceful coastal town with museums and ruins that tell the story of the 1902 eruption. Pack sturdy footwear, plenty of water and light waterproof clothing for walks, as mountain weather can change quickly even in December.

Beaches and Island Time

The south and east of Martinique are ideal when you want a few slower days. Sainte-Anne has a friendly village feel and is close to some of the island’s best beaches, including the long, beautiful stretch at Les Salines. The water is usually calm enough for swimming and snorkelling, with colourful fish visible close to shore.

Backpackers can keep costs manageable by choosing simple accommodation, buying picnic supplies from local shops and using buses where routes are convenient. Evenings are best spent outdoors, perhaps with grilled fish, accras and a cool fruit juice while the sea breeze moves through the palms.

Practical December Tips

Book popular hostels and guesthouses early if you plan to travel around Christmas and New Year, as the island becomes busier during the festive period. December is also a good month to reserve ferries and any guided hikes in advance. Carry insect repellent, sun cream and a refillable water bottle wherever you go.

French is the official language, but a warm greeting and a little patience go a long way. With a flexible itinerary, Martinique offers an excellent mix of beaches, culture, food and outdoor adventure. It is a destination where backpacking feels comfortable without losing its sense of discovery.
