Martinique Backpacking

Caribbean Holidays, Martinique Backpacking, Backpacker walking along a quiet tropical beach in Martinique in August, with volcanic hills and turquoise sea

Why Visit in August

Martinique in August is warm, lively and full of character. If you are planning a backpacking holiday, this is a good month to experience the island beyond the main resorts, from colourful Fort-de-France to small fishing villages and forest trails. Expect daytime temperatures around 30°C, warm seas and plenty of opportunities to travel at your own pace.

August falls within the wetter season, so short, heavy showers are possible, particularly in the afternoon. They rarely spoil the whole day, and they bring out the rich green colour of the hills. Pack a light waterproof jacket, use reef-safe sun cream and leave room in your plans for a flexible change of scenery.

Start in Fort-de-France

Fort-de-France makes an excellent starting point for backpacking in Martinique. Wander around La Savane, visit the distinctive Schoelcher Library and explore the covered market, where vendors sell spices, fresh fruit, pastries and local specialities. It is an easy place to settle into the island’s French-Caribbean rhythm.

Choose simple accommodation near the centre and you can reach cafés, shops and the waterfront on foot. Try accras, a popular salt-cod fritter, or sample a local ti-punch if you are over 18. Ferries also connect Fort-de-France with Trois-Îlets, making it straightforward to add beaches and historic sights without hiring a car immediately.

Beaches and Coastal Days

Martinique’s coastline suits independent travellers who enjoy mixing well-known beaches with quieter bays. Anse Dufour and Anse Noire are favourites for swimming and snorkelling, while the long sands of Les Salines offer space to relax beneath the palms. Arrive early for the calmest water and a more peaceful atmosphere.

Public transport is useful around larger towns, although services can be limited in more remote areas. Shared taxis, known locally as taxis collectifs, can help with longer journeys, and a small hire car gives you much more freedom. Always check the return arrangements before heading to an isolated beach, especially outside peak hours.

Mountains and Rainforest

For a different side of the island, travel north towards Mount Pelée. The routes around the volcano pass through dense rainforest, and the scenery changes quickly from coastal heat to cool, misty uplands. Experienced walkers can tackle longer trails, while shorter paths near Le Morne-Rouge provide a gentler introduction.

August showers can make paths slippery, so sturdy walking shoes are essential. Take plenty of water, snacks and offline maps, and check local conditions before setting out. A guide is a sensible choice for demanding routes, particularly if cloud reduces visibility or you are unfamiliar with tropical hiking.

A Flexible Island Adventure

Saint-Pierre is a rewarding stop for history lovers, with museums and ruins explaining how the former capital was destroyed by Mount Pelée in 1902. Further south, villages such as Sainte-Anne and Le Diamant offer relaxed evenings, local restaurants and easy access to the coast. Staying in guesthouses or small apartments helps you meet residents and other travellers.

Keep your itinerary loose, as weather and transport can affect travel times in August. With a little preparation, Martinique is an approachable destination for backpackers: French infrastructure, welcoming communities, excellent food and landscapes that range from rainforest to reef. Plan sensibly, travel light and you can enjoy a memorable Caribbean holiday with plenty of freedom.
