Old San Juan Colours

March is a brilliant time to explore Puerto Rico, and Old San Juan is the perfect place to begin your Instagram adventure. The historic capital is packed with colourful buildings, grand wooden doors and pretty balconies, all set along streets paved with distinctive blue cobblestones. Morning light brings out the detail in the façades while the lanes are still pleasantly quiet.

Wander through Calle de la Fortaleza, where the famous changing umbrellas create an instantly recognisable photograph, then look for lesser-known corners nearby. A bright doorway, flowering balcony or glimpse of the Atlantic can make an excellent candid shot. Wear comfortable shoes, as the best images often appear when you take your time and explore beyond the main squares.

El Morro Views

Castillo San Felipe del Morro offers some of the most memorable views in San Juan. This centuries-old fortress stands above the sea, with thick stone walls, open courtyards and wide stretches of blue water. Its dramatic position gives photographs a strong sense of place, whether you focus on the fort’s architecture or the horizon beyond it.

Visit later in the afternoon for warm light across the ramparts, but allow enough time to explore inside the castle first. The grassy area outside is ideal for a wider portrait, while the curved walls and watchtowers provide interesting framing. March usually brings comfortable conditions for walking, although sun protection and water are still essential.

El Yunque Rainforest

For a complete change of scenery, head to El Yunque National Forest. Just outside San Juan, this lush mountain landscape combines misty trails, tropical plants and cascading waterfalls. The forest’s rich greens look especially striking in photographs, and the cooler, fresh air makes a welcome break from the coast.

Choose a marked trail that matches your fitness level and check current access information before travelling, as conditions can change after heavy rain. La Coca Falls is easy to reach and makes a popular image, while higher viewpoints can reveal broad views towards the Caribbean. Keep your camera protected from sudden showers and take a moment to enjoy the sounds of the forest without looking through the lens.

Beach Golden Hour

Puerto Rico’s beaches provide the relaxed final scene for a March photo collection. Condado and Isla Verde are convenient choices near San Juan, with palms, soft sand and warm Caribbean water. For a quieter atmosphere, consider travelling to a less-developed stretch of coastline and photographing the shoreline just after sunrise.

Golden hour is ideal for natural portraits, long shadows and glowing sea colours. Rather than staging every image, capture simple moments such as walking beside the waves, enjoying a fresh drink or watching the last light fade. With historic streets, rainforest scenery and beautiful beaches all within reach, Puerto Rico makes it easy to create a varied and personal Instagram story.
