Old San Juan Colours

Old San Juan is one of Puerto Rico’s easiest places to photograph, and you barely need to plan a route. Wander through the cobbled streets and you will find pastel buildings, painted shutters, decorative balconies and bright blue doors at almost every turn. The historic city feels lively and lived-in, rather than like a film set.

Begin near Calle Fortaleza, where colourful umbrellas sometimes stretch above the street, then explore the quieter lanes around the city walls. Look out for flower-filled balconies and the distinctive Spanish colonial details that give each building its character. Early morning brings softer light and fewer people, while late afternoon adds a warm glow to the façades.

Umbrella Street

La Fortaleza’s umbrella display has become one of Puerto Rico’s best-known Instagram hotspots. Hundreds of umbrellas create a cheerful canopy above the narrow street, making an instantly recognisable image and a fun place to pause during a day of sightseeing.

The display can change from time to time, so the real pleasure is seeing what is there during your visit. Photograph upwards for a bold pattern of colour, or include the street below to capture its energy. Visit earlier in the day if you want a clearer shot, then stay nearby for independent shops, cafés and local snacks.

El Morro Views

Castillo San Felipe del Morro offers some of the most impressive holiday photographs in San Juan. This sixteenth-century fortress stands above the Atlantic, with thick stone walls, watchtowers and wide views stretching along the coast.

Inside the fort, frame the small garitas, or sentry boxes, against the sea for a classic Puerto Rico image. Outside, the broad green lawn gives you space to photograph the entire fortress. The light is particularly attractive near sunset, although a hat, water and sun protection are useful at any time of day.

El Yunque Rainforest

For a completely different backdrop, head east to El Yunque National Forest. Its rainforest trails lead through dense greenery, misty hills and streams, with waterfalls and natural pools providing plenty of opportunities for atmospheric photographs.

Wear sensible footwear because paths can be wet and uneven, and check local access information before travelling. A simple portrait beside a waterfall works well, but do not forget the smaller details: raindrops on leaves, bright tropical plants and views through the trees can tell just as much of the story.

Beach Sunset Moments

Puerto Rico’s beaches are made for relaxed, natural holiday photos. Along the north coast, you can find wide sandy stretches and dramatic waves, while areas such as Condado and Isla Verde offer an easy combination of sea views, restaurants and comfortable accommodation.

For the best light, arrive around an hour before sunset and let the changing sky provide the colour. Photograph footprints in the sand, palms moving in the breeze or friends enjoying the shoreline rather than posing too formally. These are the images that bring back the feeling of a warm evening long after your Caribbean holiday has ended.
