Old San Juan Colours

Old San Juan is one of the easiest places in Puerto Rico to fill your camera roll. Its narrow cobbled streets, brightly painted buildings and flower-filled balconies create a different backdrop around almost every corner. Visit early in the morning for softer light and quieter lanes, when the city feels relaxed and local.

Make time for Calle de la Fortaleza, where colourful umbrellas often add an extra splash of character, then wander towards the waterfront for views across San Juan Bay. Comfortable shoes are essential, as the historic streets can be uneven, but the reward is a collection of natural, lively photographs that capture the personality of Puerto Rico.

El Morro Views

Castillo San Felipe del Morro is one of Puerto Rico’s most recognisable landmarks and a superb Instagram hotspot. The impressive sixteenth-century fortress stands above the sea, with thick stone walls, watchtowers and wide grassy areas that make the setting feel dramatic without being difficult to explore.

For the best variety, photograph the fort from the surrounding park before going inside to capture its arches, stairways and ocean-facing viewpoints. Late afternoon brings warmer colour across the stone, while the breeze from the Atlantic keeps the walk more comfortable during April’s pleasantly warm weather.

El Yunque Forest

El Yunque National Forest offers a completely different look from the capital. Lush vegetation, tree ferns, mountain trails and cascading water make it ideal for nature photography. April is a particularly appealing month to visit, with warm conditions and plenty of green scenery after the wetter season.

Choose a marked trail to a waterfall or viewpoint, and allow extra time for the journey rather than rushing between stops. Mist can gather among the trees, giving photographs a wonderfully atmospheric feel. Wear sturdy footwear, carry water and protect your phone from spray when you are near the falls.

Beachside Moments

Puerto Rico’s beaches are perfect for relaxed holiday photographs, especially when you want a simple image of island life. Condado Beach is convenient for combining sea views with cafés and city comforts, while Isla Verde offers broad sands, palms and a lively atmosphere close to San Juan.

For calmer, more natural scenery, consider a beach on the west coast or a day trip to Culebra. Sunrise and the hour before sunset usually provide the most flattering light, with fewer harsh shadows and softer colours. Keep valuables secure, respect beach guidelines and let the landscape do most of the work.

Bioluminescent Bay

A visit to one of Puerto Rico’s bioluminescent bays is an unforgettable addition to an Instagram-focused itinerary. At night, tiny marine organisms create blue-green flashes in the water when it is gently disturbed. Mosquito Bay on Vieques is especially famous, although tours are also available at Laguna Grande near Fajardo.

Dark skies make the experience more impressive, so check the moon phase when planning your trip and book a guided kayak tour in advance. Ordinary phone cameras may struggle in low light, but the memory is still worth sharing through a short video or a thoughtfully written caption. More importantly, enjoy the rare chance to see one of nature’s most unusual displays.
