Gustavia At Sunrise

April is an excellent time to explore Saint Barthélemy, and Gustavia harbour is one of the best places to begin. Arrive early for soft light over the red-roofed buildings, sailing boats and bright blue water. Colombier Beach is one of Saint Barthélemy’s most rewarding Instagram hotspots. There are no roads leading directly to the sand, so you reach it by walking along a coastal path or arriving by boat. That sense of escape is part of its appeal, with clear water, green hills and a quiet curve of pale sand.

Bring water, sensible footwear and a phone or camera case, as the path can be uneven. April’s bright but manageable sunshine brings out the different shades of the sea, while the surrounding hills provide a natural frame for wide landscape shots. If you snorkel, capture a few underwater details as well as the beach itself.

Gouverneur Beach

Gouverneur Beach is famous for its simple, uncluttered beauty. The road opens onto a striking view of white sand and vivid turquoise water, with low rocky headlands on either side. It is a superb location for clean, spacious photographs that show off the natural character of the island.

Visit in the morning or late afternoon for gentler light and fewer harsh shadows. There are limited facilities, so take refreshments with you and remember to protect the beach from litter. A posed photograph is easy here, but the best images often include small details such as footprints in the sand or waves breaking over the rocks.

Shell Beach At Sunset

Close to Gustavia, Shell Beach is an easy choice when you want a memorable photograph without travelling far. Its shoreline is covered with tiny shells and smooth stones, and the harbour-side setting gives the beach a more relaxed, local feel. During April, the evening light can turn the water gold, pink and pale blue.

Stay until sunset and take photographs from the sand, the rocks or the steps leading down from the road. Watch your footing on the shoreline and avoid removing shells, as they are an important part of the beach’s natural character. Afterwards, Gustavia’s restaurants are close by, so it is simple to combine a photo stop with dinner.

Some of Saint Barthélemy’s most appealing images come from travelling between beaches rather than visiting a single landmark. Roads rise and dip through dry tropical vegetation, opening suddenly onto views of bays, boats and hillside villas. April is a comfortable month for exploring at your own pace, especially with an early start.

Choose a safe place to stop and never photograph while driving. Look for viewpoints around Lurin, Lorient and the roads near Colombier, where the island’s shape becomes clear from above.
