Picture-Perfect Gustavia
Gustavia is one of the best places in Saint Barthelemy for an easy introduction to the island’s photogenic side. Wander around the harbour and you will find red-roofed buildings, polished yachts and small boats bobbing on clear blue water. The compact streets make it simple to explore at a relaxed pace, camera or phone ready.
For a classic Instagram shot, frame the harbour from the road above town, especially when the sun is lower in the sky. The warm light brings out the colour of the buildings and gives the water a deep turquoise tone. Arrive early for quieter views, or visit in the evening when Gustavia begins to glow.
Shell Beach At Sunset
Just a short walk from Gustavia, Shell Beach is a natural favourite for holiday photographs. Its shoreline is covered with tiny shells and smooth pieces of coral, creating a distinctive foreground for pictures of the sea. The beach is close to restaurants and town, but still feels pleasantly removed from the harbour.
Late afternoon is the time to come, when the sun softens and the beach takes on a golden glow. Capture a wide shot from the sand, or focus on bare feet, shells and gently breaking waves for a more personal holiday memory. Take care not to remove shells from the beach, and keep the coastline looking as beautiful as you found it.
Colombier Viewpoint
The walk to Colombier Beach offers some of the most rewarding views in Saint Barthelemy. From the trail and viewpoint, you can look across a sweeping bay framed by green hills, with bright water stretching towards the horizon. It is a peaceful setting that shows a wilder side of the island.
Wear comfortable shoes and carry water, as the path can be uneven and exposed in the midday sun. The viewpoint is ideal for a wide landscape image, while the beach below provides lovely details such as palm trees, calm shallows and anchored boats. Go in the morning or late afternoon for softer light and cooler temperatures.
Rugged Grand Fond
For something different from the island’s calm beaches, head to Anse de Grand Fond on the Atlantic coast. This striking shoreline has dark rocks, restless waves and a more dramatic feel, making it a strong choice for atmospheric photographs. The contrast between the rugged coast and vivid Caribbean sky is particularly memorable.
Stay well back from the water, as the waves can be powerful and swimming is not recommended here. Photograph the coastline from a safe viewpoint and try a horizontal composition to show its scale. Grand Fond is also a good reminder that Saint Barthelemy has plenty to offer beyond postcard-perfect bays.
St Jean Beach Style
St Jean Beach combines beautiful scenery with the relaxed sophistication that makes Saint Barthelemy so distinctive. The long sweep of sand, clear shallow water and green hills create an instantly recognisable island backdrop. You may also spot small planes approaching the nearby airstrip, adding an unusual detail to your photos.
Choose a quieter stretch of sand for natural beach images, or include the colourful beach clubs for a livelier holiday feel. Morning light is bright and clean, while late afternoon gives the hills and water more depth. Keep your photographs natural, enjoy a swim, and let the setting do most of the work.
