April Walking Holidays

Why Walk in April

April is an excellent time for a walking holiday in Saint Martin and Sint Maarten. The islands are warm, generally dry and refreshed by steady trade winds, making it much easier to enjoy an active day outdoors than during the hotter, more humid months. You can walk in sunshine, pause for a swim and still have plenty of time for a relaxed evening meal.

This is also a lively period to visit. The winter crowds have started to ease, yet beaches, restaurants and local attractions retain a welcoming atmosphere. Pack light clothing, sturdy footwear, a hat and plenty of sun cream, as even a gentle coastal stroll can feel hot in the midday sun.

Coastal and Hill Trails

Saint Martin offers rewarding walks through a surprisingly varied landscape. Trails around the island lead past rocky headlands, quiet coves, salt ponds and low hills covered with cacti and scrub. Routes near the coast are especially enjoyable in April, when the sea is a vivid blue and the breeze takes the edge off the heat.

For a memorable outing, consider walking around the Loterie Farm area or exploring paths near Pic Paradis, the island’s highest point. Higher ground brings broad views across bays and neighbouring islands, while shorter routes around Grand Case and Anse Marcel are easier to combine with lunch or a swim. Good local footwear is important, as some paths are uneven and can become slippery after rain.

Beach Walks and Nature

Some of the best walking in Sint Maarten is wonderfully simple: follow the shoreline and let the scenery set the pace. Mullet Bay, Dawn Beach and the long stretch at Orient Bay all offer opportunities for an early morning or late afternoon walk. The light is softer at these times, and the beaches feel cooler and quieter.

Nature lovers can also look for birds around the island’s salt ponds and coastal wetlands. Flamingos, herons and other waterbirds may be seen feeding in the shallows, particularly when you take time to stop and watch. Keep to established paths where possible, give wildlife space and carry water, as shade can be limited.

Walk, Eat and Explore

A walking holiday here is not just about trails. In Philipsburg, you can stroll along the boardwalk, browse small shops and pause for a cool drink beside Great Bay. On the French side, Marigot combines waterfront views with a lively market, local bakeries and cafés where you can enjoy the island’s French-Caribbean character.

Plan walks around the places you want to experience rather than trying to cover too much in one day. A morning route followed by a beach lunch is a comfortable April routine, and an evening wander is a pleasant way to discover restaurants and listen to live music. With two cultures, varied scenery and warm weather, Saint Martin and Sint Maarten make walking feel like a natural part of the holiday.
