January Walking Holidays

Why Visit in January?

January is an excellent time for a walking holiday in Saint Martin and Sint Maarten. The islands are enjoying their dry season, so you can usually expect warm days, lower humidity and plenty of bright sunshine. Daytime temperatures are comfortable for exploring on foot, particularly in the cooler mornings and late afternoons.

This is also a welcome escape from the cold and darker days in the UK. After breakfast, you could be following a quiet coastal path, stopping at a beach café for fresh juice, and watching the sea change from deep blue to turquoise. The gentle trade winds often make walking more pleasant than the thermometer suggests.

Coastal Walks and Beaches

Saint Martin is ideal for combining easy walks with time beside the sea. Around Grand Case, a shoreline stroll brings together sandy beaches, colourful houses and views across the bay. Further south, paths around Terres Basses offer a quieter setting, with rocky coves and stretches of coast where you can pause for a swim.

On the Dutch side, Sint Maarten has attractive waterfront walks around Philipsburg. The boardwalk is an easy option when you want a relaxed outing, while nearby routes lead towards viewpoints over Great Bay. Walking early helps you avoid the strongest midday heat and gives you a peaceful start before the shops and restaurants become busy.

Hillside Views

Although the islands are compact, they offer some rewarding uphill walks. Trails towards Pic Paradis, the highest point on Saint Martin, pass through green vegetation and provide impressive views over the coastline. The routes can be uneven in places, so sturdy trainers or walking shoes are sensible, especially after rain.

From higher ground, the islands’ divided character becomes clear, with bays, villages and small offshore islands spread below you. Take water, allow plenty of time, and avoid rushing. A local guide can be particularly useful if you want to discover less obvious paths or learn more about the island’s plants, history and changing landscape.

Walks with Local Character

A walking holiday here is not only about scenery. Routes through villages and historic areas reveal a lively mix of French and Dutch influences, from bakeries and open-air markets to brightly painted homes and old churches. In Marigot, you can walk around the harbour and up to Fort Louis for broad views over the bay.

On the Dutch side, explore Philipsburg’s streets at your own pace, then settle into a waterside restaurant for local seafood or a cool drink. The islands are known for their relaxed hospitality, and short walks often lead to memorable conversations, unexpected viewpoints and excellent places to eat.

Planning Your Holiday

January is a popular month, so book accommodation and flights early, particularly if you want to stay near a favourite beach or walking area. Choose light clothing, sun protection, a reusable water bottle and footwear with good grip. A small day bag is enough for most outings.

For the best experience, mix planned routes with unhurried beach walks and rest days. Saint Martin and Sint Maarten are small enough to explore in one holiday, yet varied enough to keep each day different. In January, that combination of sunshine, scenery and local life makes walking here an easy pleasure.
