February Backpacking

Caribbean Holidays, February Backpacking, Backpacker walking along a sunny Caribbean harbour in Saint Vincent, with colourful boats, green hills and blue water

Why Visit in February?

February is one of the best months for a backpacking holiday in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines. The weather is generally warm, bright and pleasantly dry, with daytime temperatures sitting around 28°C. Sea breezes take the edge off the heat, making it comfortable to explore on foot, travel between islands or relax on a beach after a busy day.

This is also a lively time to visit. You will find plenty of atmosphere around Kingstown, while the smaller Grenadine islands offer a slower pace and beautiful scenery without feeling overly crowded. If you are looking for Caribbean sunshine, outdoor adventures and the freedom to travel independently, February is an excellent choice.

Starting in Saint Vincent

Begin your trip in Kingstown, the compact capital of Saint Vincent. Its busy streets, historic churches and waterfront markets give you an immediate sense of everyday island life. Browse stalls piled with mangoes, breadfruit and spices, then stop for a simple local lunch such as roasted fish, rice or provisions.

From Kingstown, you can reach a range of worthwhile backpacking stops by bus or taxi. Walk through the Botanical Gardens, visit Fort Charlotte for wide views across the coast, or follow a trail towards waterfalls and lush forest. Travelling around Saint Vincent is part of the experience, so leave room in your plans for scenic journeys and unplanned discoveries.

Adventure on Saint Vincent

Saint Vincent is ideal if you enjoy active travel. The hike up La Soufrière is challenging, but the changing landscape makes it memorable, from rainforest paths to stark volcanic ground near the summit. Go with a local guide, wear sturdy footwear and allow plenty of time, as conditions can change quickly.

For an easier day outdoors, explore the Vermont Nature Trail or visit Dark View Falls. You can swim beneath the falls, although it is sensible to check local advice after heavy rain. February’s drier conditions usually make walking and sightseeing easier, but sun protection and plenty of water are still essential.

Island-Hopping in the Grenadines

No backpacking holiday here is complete without seeing at least one of the Grenadines. Ferries and water taxis connect Saint Vincent with islands such as Bequia, Mustique, Canouan and Union Island, although schedules can be weather-dependent. Bequia is an especially good first stop, with a relaxed harbour, affordable guesthouses and beaches within easy reach.

Spend a few days swimming, snorkelling and exploring quiet coastal roads. Union Island is a useful base for discovering the Tobago Cays, where clear water, coral reefs and green islets create some of the Caribbean’s finest sailing and snorkelling scenery. Pack light, keep your plans flexible and ask local operators about the safest crossings.

Practical February Tips

Book popular ferries and budget accommodation ahead of time, particularly if your February trip overlaps with school holidays. Guesthouses, small hotels and simple apartments are often the best choices for independent travellers, and staying locally gives you more opportunities to meet residents and other visitors.

Carry lightweight clothing, reef-safe sun cream, insect repellent and a waterproof bag for boat trips. Most importantly, slow down and enjoy the rhythm of the islands. With warm weather, welcoming communities and plenty of opportunities for adventure, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines make February a rewarding destination for backpackers.
